Anxiety due to trauma?

13 years ago 0 659 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0

Davit,

This is very interesting.  I had not thought about the fear of fear as a problem. Thank you for bringing it up. Yes it is the fear of having the thought that is causing the anxiety. One way of challenging the way I am thinking is the fact that I have driven myself and gone to the class alone and nothing bad has happened to me.  So this thought reinforces the fact that nothing bad will happen to me.  The nightmare is not based on fact it is just a nightmare thats all.  I now see this anxious and negative thought and nightmare for what it is. A false hood and lie. It is not true and it is not reality. Thank you for helping me figure this out.  Sometimes the fear of fear makes us blind to the truth.

ATTA GIRL!!

Keep pushing forward and using this thinking!

Someone can always walk you to your car, just ask!

Great positive thinking!

Josie,
Going to my class early is a good idea I think that will help.  This class is not on a collage campus or at a gym. Here in the U.S. where I live they don't have security to walk you to your car on campus anyway or at the gym. The only place they have security escorts that I know of is at Indian casinos and I do not frequent casinos and thats only if you win a large amount for money  Its pretty much every man or woman for yourself out here.  You are right I did drive myself to the class before and nothing bad happened. So the anxious and negative thoughts are not valid anymore. Yes I can and will go to the class again.  I will still need to be realistic and be very careful when out at night. Staying aware of my surrounding. I will not give up this class because of this.

Red,

Your trigger is evident. You have driven to class before and can do it again, perhaps a little exposure or preparation may help. How about going to class early and/or having someone walk you to your car, when its done?  All campus' have on site security and exercise classes can assist you as well.

You are getting out and enjoying yourself, push forward and keep this feeling.  We are here if you need us!

Fear of a fear is very common as you know and it must be obvious to you that it is not the fact your car may be broken into again that bothers you it is having the thought that causes the anxiety. Fearing you will have the thought. What can you do to challenge the way you are thinking? Not the nightmare but how you are seeing the nightmare. Can you challenge your perception of the night mare? Do this and it will go away.

Here for you

I decided to bring this old thread up and post to it because I am having nightmares due to a old traumatic event.
I had a tough night last night with nightmares and woke up in a panicked state.  My car was broken into and things were stolen out of my car in the nightmare. I was having a hard time getting my windows replaced and had no where safe to go or keep my car.

I have been taking a class at night and driving myself there. I guess this has made my memories and of having my car broke  into and my purse stolen along with my identity resurface.  I am always very hyper vigilant when outside of the house due to several ptsd type events in my life. Anyway I am feeling emotionally and physically exhausted this morning and am having a hard time shaking this fear.  I have my class to go to tonight and I think I should be safe as long as I am very careful. This is one of those thoughts that is hard for my to challenge due to the ptsd and now the nightmare related to it. I do not want to be a prisoner in my own house because of this.  I have just started getting out and enjoying my life. I am feeling a little better after posting this and am waiting for the lingering fear I feel in the center of my chest to go away.  Fear is a very powerful emotion.

Hi Kat

Welcome... and wow what a brave and amazing woman you are.  I have never experienced anything remotely close to the loss you have BUT I do know what it's like to worry incessantly about things happening to the ones we love.    I do believe this is the place for you and the people on here have been amazingly supportive and offer a ton of insight and advice.  It's just great to know you're not alone.

My own worries are about my children...especially my little guy.  He's two but was born with a congenital heart defect... Although he's had surgery (at 6 weeks) and is doing amazingly well, truth is you would never know he has a heart condition.  I worry about it all the time.  His heart is vulnerable to infections and he will eventually need further surgery...there is no timeline though.. it will just start to decline...

I know I can't put these fears on him though so I constantly work on letting him live / play his life to the fullest.  Hard to do at times... and I dread the sports years... yikes!!

Have you been to grief counselling?  They often do a lot of work with the anxieties that follow and yours fit that perfectly... You lost the love of your life... so worrying about it happening again to yourself or someone else seems perfectly rationale to me... but not healthy.

Kat... the program should be great for challenging your thoughts but you may want to talk to someone personally though.. I find that can be very helpful.

Be patient with yourself and keep posting :)
