Alison: I too have been prescribed Xanax. I've been on it for 2 and a half years. But now it isn't working I take 6 mgs on a bad day. Which seem to be everyday now. So I think I've been become accustumed to it so now I have to wait for another 2 weeks to hopefully get a new prescription. It's taken 3 months to change just 2 of my prescriptions 1) Increase of Wellbutrin to 300 mgs a day 2) Being taken off Amitriptyline (thank god) I also stopped taken the sleeping pill that got changed after the manufacturer of my original pills deciced to take them off the market. So I got stuck taking a pill that leaves a metal taste in my mouth 24/7. I couldn't deal with that anymore, everything I ate, the water I would drink would always taste metal. So hopefully I will be able to get another new priscrption for that because as you can see by the time stamp on this entry it is really late but I am unable to sleep. Sorry for the rant I was just going to tell you of my dealings with Xanax and I went off on a tanget that had nothing to do with your original question. Again sorry! "B"

I have been perscribed Xanax for quite some time now. I'm young and have been coping with chronic anxiety and panic attacks for several years. Xanax is a wonderful medication IF it is used porperly. Abuse of xanax has serious consequences. However, if your condition is taking away part of your life quality, then you have to look at the benefits versus the risk. Also, trust your doctor or find one that you do trust. chances are, if they're perscribing you something it's because they believe you would benefit from having it. Hope this helps!

Alison xanax is a great medication for use with panic attacks but is also very additive. I have taken xanax for 8 yrs and my body has built a tolarence to the medication. I currently take 6mg everyday and somedays more. If your just starting taking it I would suggest taking only .05 mg as needed daily no more than 3 a day. It does wonders for panic but try to fight off the panic yourself mentally and use the xanax as a last resort.. Hope this helps and good luck.

Some years ago when I was having very frequent panic attacks and anxiety (when it all started), I was prescribed Xanax. There were periods of taking Xanax and periods when everything was quite OK. Finally, I do not have sudden anxiety and panic attacks without any reason. I don't know if Xanax helped but I am feeling better now, after some years (of course, sometimes I am really stressful about going by transport- especially planes- but it is another story, claustrophobic feeling). I know that Xanax does not cure cause of anxiety, it cures symptoms but still...I feel better now. And no side effects for me (or probably I am not able to see them :D). So, if Xanax helps, why not?

Hi Allison, I know exactly how you feel. I was afraid to take xanax or any meds but when I finally did start taking xanax it helped me so much! IF you are really struggling with panic and anxiety, xanax is very effective. I take it before work and I do not feel spacy. It just takes the edge off.YOu could start on the smallest dose. I take half of the smallest dose and it works for me. Best of luck, Sarah
