I started out on paxil a ssri which are the most prescribed for depression. I have been on paxil for 7 yrs 60mg per day. But I have did alot of research and have found that effexor xr a snri is better for people severe panic and agoraphobia. ssri's block seritonen only, where the snri's block seritonen and norepi......I just started effexor xr and Im hoping for good results.

Thank you so much for your response again Isabella. You are very kind and understanding. I definitely hear what you are saying about negative thoughts, and how in time they can learn to depress me. I will try and talk to a psychologist shortly. Thank you again. :)

Maggie, It is not unlikely that you would have comorbid depression with your existing anxiety. It is understandable if you do and,in my opinion, it is a normal response for someone suffering severe panic and anxiety like us. I mean, look at the facts: you want to go places and do things but you are too scared to go, you want to be normal, successful, independent, but you can't seem to do anything alone, you want to hang out with other people and have fun but you don't want to share the fact that you suffer from panic disorder and what would they say if you had an attack while hanging out? These are things that I have struggled with and it started to depress me. Not only that but our energy is wrapped up in panic and keeping it away that it leaves us physically, emotionally, mentally drained. Also, when anxious, I find that I am very irritable on top of being exhausted. I have been where you are and it will get better. I truly understand how you feel though. After having unrelenting anxiety for so long, it is only a natural response to get depressed but you can get out of it. Alot of it is the negative thought processes that occur in depression and anxiety, thoughts like "it will never get better, I am doomed, I will never be normal again, I just want my life back". You have to change the way that you think and the way that you cope with things. If you can take them, an SSRI may be able to help you and you may want to talk with your doctor about that. Me being the medicine phobic that I am had to see a psychologist who has helped me and continues to help me with my negative thought processes, how to handle stress and coping techniques, and understanding how certain things can trigger anxiety and depression and how to recognize that and stop it before it does. You will get better with time but you have to have patience (which is hard to have as an panic sufferer when you want relief and you want it now ;-) Hang in there, be strong, and have some faith. Good luck.

Maggie, It never hurts to get the opinion of a mental health professional. You can also take a tour of our sister site: www.depressioncenter.net and take our depression test, bring it to your doctor and discuss it together. It is time to continue challenging those anxious thoughts. I know it isn't easy but you can do it! Just take it one step at a time. Try not to focus so much on the symptoms, start changing that thinking around and grabbing hold of that anxiety. Danielle ______________________ The PC Support Team

It seems as though everytime I have attacks at home, those are the ones I fear the most. Maybe because I usually don't recognize them as such, because they are happening in my 'safe place'. I don't get out much at all these days, and I am currently unemployed and do not attend school. I feel everyday the anxiety/panic is a full time job for me now, like there is nothing else but this incredible fear. When I have these attacks at home, sometimes I find myself crying my eyes out from the fear and doom I experience during them. Still, after the attacks subside, I am anxiety ridden for hours and feel like I could panic at any given moment again. I was wondering if there are any other people who go through panic attacks at home, or acute anxiety following attacks that just won't seem to quit? Also, if I am crying more during my attacks and maybe even sometimes afterwards now- could I have comorbid depression that I should look into treating? Thank you.

I just started 5mg Lexapro today. Haven't noticed many side effects... a slight "head tightness" and whatnot... something similar to what I experienced starting Zoloft. However, not much nausea so far -- I'm going to stay at 5mg for awhile and see how it goes. Thanks Gal! - Jeremy

After waking too many nights with stomach pains, I've decided to stop taking Zoloft and switch to Lexapro. I was on Zoloft for about 7 days, and I only made it to about 30mg before I had enough. Hopefully the Lexapro works better, and I can get started on the CBT.

Thanks fruit!! That really does make me feel better. Still haven't started the lexapro though ;) I am going to start it though. I have heard good things about it which has reduced my fears. Thanks!
