panic and smoking

Hi there. I am new to this site too. I used an alias 'oscar' but I'm really a young woman in my late twenties and a therapist. I find it so comforting that there are other people who share the annoying and sometimes debilitating nature of panic. And to Kristyn, who has a long drive ahead....the good news is, you will be fine. I find it helpful to remember that a panic attack can't physically last forever, your body gets too tired. and eventually the seratonin kicks in (with or without medication) to calm your system. I also find it helpful to say "panic is just a physiological phenomenon and i am reacting to it on an emotional level by being afraid.....but if I take some deep breaths, pay attention to the road...no matter what, this too shall pass". Instead of wishing that you won't have a panic attack on the drive, can you say "if this happens, i know what it is and i know that i'm always fine". ?

I feel just the way you do when I drive on the freeway...surface is okay....and I applaud your courage. There is no way in hell I could do that driving for 13 hours. I, too am new to this site. Hopefully, after I do the program, I will be on the road again enjoying life. Good luck, Janet

Thanks Angel and Lulu for all of your encouragment and advice. I must say, I just joined this sight about 4 days ago but it really helps to know that there are other people going through the same things as you. I hope that doesn't sound selfish; I would never wish this on my worst enemy. It's just nice to have people who understand your problems. Thanks again.

Thats alright Kristyn i also have a fear of driving but i have found the more exposure work i do the easier it has become to get in the car and go i have 4 children and i know that puts my anxiety up even higher when i have to take them with me.You can do it i know you can just try and be as relaxed as you can because the more anxious you are the more likely it will be that you panic so nice and relaxed ok.Goodluck. Hi Kristyn. I also feel uncomfortable driving or being the car for long distances. But what i try to do is some breathing techniques. Take deep breaths. I learned this from yoga....so when you inhale, your stomach should go out like a balloon...and when you exhale your stomach should go back in. Do this slowly...its very helpful to calm you down. Also,I try to put on music i like and think of happy thoughts. Think of you and your husband dancing and having a wonderful time. Always think of yourself in a perfect state of well-being.....and work towards being that person (free from anxiety). I try to do that every day. I picture the person i would be WITHOUT anxiety.....what i would be doing, where i would be going, the smell around me (e.g fresh air). It sounds silly, but this helps! I know you can do it! U are independent and a beautiful human being. U can do it! I promise!

Hi Lulu, Thanks so much for your advice. I truly appreciate any suggestions. I will try your techniques and hopefully I can successfully make it. The part that's the worst is that my 4 mo. old daughter will be in the car w/ me. That makes me more nervous about it. I hope I will do okay. Thanks again for you help. Kristyn

Hi Kristyn i dont smoke but i have heard that it does increase anxiety so giving up would probably help you in more then one way.As for driving the long distance that you have to make sure you sleep well before you have to drive and practice all the slow/deep breathing techniques and stay near your husband when your driving thats the things id do anyway i hope they help.Goodluck. I was just wondering if anyone has any thoughts or info on the effects of smoking on panic attacks. I am a smoker and have heard before that smoking increases panic. I am trying to quit because my panic attacks are so bad that if quitting smoking will help, I'm all for it. Another area I would like some feedback on is driving. My husband and I are moving next week. We have a 13 hour drive; we will be driving separate cars so I absolutely must drive. I am terrified. I got my first panic attack about 5 yrs. ago while driving and it seems to trigger them. It seems that when I drive long distances they occurr more. I feel like I am detached from my body; my heart starts racing, my palms sweat. I feel as if I'm about to lose control. I'm scared I'll have a heart attack, brain anyurism(I'm sure I spelled that wrong), or something that will cause me to wreck and die. If anyone has any suggestions on how I can deal w/ this trip, I would greatly appreciate it. I can't stop thinking about it. I am new to this site and I would like to say that it is quite comforting to know there are other people out there going through the same thing as me. Thanks for any help you can offer.
