hi janet, i use to be the same way about driving in a big city about 40 miles from my home. i just decided that i had to do something about it. i am 55 and i am 6'2" and go about 210 lbs. and i like to think that i am not scared to do anything but even the parkway going into the city bothered me so i made up my mind to do something about it. i started going on the roads that i didn't like late at night or more like early in the mornings when there wasn't much traffic and getting use to where i wanted to go in the day light. well after i got to know them some i drove in the traffic more and more till it didn't bother me anymore. i still think about it some but i am ok with it. i also bought a gps. it kind of assured me that if i got lost i could depend on it to get me pointed the right way. i just decided to drive and if i got lost just keep on driving till i got out of the heavy traffic and find a back way home even if i had to go 50 mile out of my way. i hope something i said helps. take care.. dan.

Hi Janet, Welcome to the Panic Center! Thanks for sharing your introduction here with us. Fellow members will be responding soon. Fears associated with driving is a very popular topic here. You may want to use the search feature to perform a search of the posts here to view some of the previous discussions regarding this concern. It sounds like you are familiar with one of our other sites - (congratulations on your 4 months of freedom from this addiction!). Feel free to roam the site at your own pace. We have developed an online Panic Program which is free and many members have reported success with following the steps of the program. This program is 12-weeks. Each session is based on the previous session, so we strongly advise that you work slowly through the program and not jump ahead. If you have any questions or concerns with our "TOOLS" you can contact our support department at support@paniccenter.net. Take care and we hope to hear from you soon. I just found this site at the smoking cessation support group. That group is fabulous and I've been quit four months (do I hear faint applause?) I have anxiety attacks when I drive on the freeway. This is huge since I live in L.A. I just don't go anywhere unless I can take the surface streets which basically means I am a prisoner to a 10 or 15 mile radius. I get light-headed and fearful I'm hyperventilating and may pass out. Now that is very scary\terrifying. I mentioned on the test I don't like heights but I don't have panic attacks....am just uncomfortable. I want to be free to go anywhere again. I live alone and don't have anyone to drive me. Any suggestions?
