Welcome wjt74,

I am sorry to hear about your tragedies and your recent relationship break up. Having a relationship with someone who has narcissistic personality disorder can certainly be stressful. A great website on cluster B personality types you might want to check out for healing purposes is: outofthefog.website.

I am glad you are now able to focus on yourself and your health. You have come to the right place for support and information. Are you planning to moderate or abstain?

That is awesome. While at the meeting, try to connect with people who have been in recovery for a while. Usually groups ask people who are willing to sponsor to raise their hands. If they dont, ask around. Usually women get women sponsors and men get men. Also important is the book Alcoholics anonymous. If they dont have one, you could order it online from AA.org.

You could also read the book online at https://www.aa.org/pages/en_US/alcoholics-anonymous.

The preface to the Big book talks about reading one of the stories, I like Bills Story in the very beginning.

If you have a drinking problem, we hope that you may pause in reading one of the forty-two personal stories and think: "Yes, that happened to me": or more important, "Yes, I have felt like that" or most important, "Yes, I believe this program can work for me too".

There are also some great workshops on Youtube, if you search Big Book Workshop, you should find plenty.

Thank you foxman. Yes, alcohol isn't the answer.

There are local AA meetings, so that's my next step.

Welcome to the forums WJT74. I am glad that you had the realization that booze is not going to fix your life situation. I was at the end of the fork about 12 years ago and I too had that realization that I have to change. A silent prayer led me to a shrink who heard my story and my family history suggested that I try AA. And after a brief struggle, took a deep dive into the book Alcoholics Anonymous and I was able to identify with all the experience laid out in the book. Also I saw people recovering from this seemingly hopeless state of mind and body. That gave me hope and I started applying the principles of the program in all my activities. The obsession never came back. Hope you could find local AA meetings and get acquainted with the program of AA. Good luck.

Hello,

I am new to the forum.

At a high-level:

I have had several personal tragedies in my life that were very difficult to cope with. And very recently I have gotten out of a relationship where the other person had narcissistic personality disorder. Unfortunately, I have turned to alcohol to relieve a lot of the stress.

My goal is to completely abstain from alcohol use - period. Obviously, there are issues that need to be accounted for and addressed in parallel of maintaining sobriety. So to get this stopped and turned around, I need to change my lifestyle, my thinking and work on my personal growth.

I look forward to learning from others, being proactive in the forums and receiving / giving support from / to others.

Thank you.
