Interesting Nodrama.

I think it is fantastic that you were able to except this insight without defense. That says a lot about you and where you are in your quit.  It makes sense that seeing stories like you described could be triggering. Perhaps the stories trigger past ways of thinking or negative thoughts that fuel the thoughts that drive you to drink. It sounds like some more self reflection is in order for you to fully understand and then challenge whatever thoughts come up.

Since you have likely been reflecting for a few days - what new thoughts and insights have come up for you?

Good morning Nodrama,

The fact that you were adopted means you are a very special person who was selected by very special people who love you very dearly.

I have written before that I enjoy a daily relationship with our Heavenly Father, which has seen me through very tough times indeed.  Two examples would be my suicide attempt in October 2015 for one in which I should have died but through His grace and mercy did not, and just recently when I had to have our beautiful eldest dachshund dog put to sleep because of liver disease that came on very fast and had devastating effects on her.

I have also shared that I do believe we are all spiritual beings who came from one spiritual Heavenly Father before we were given these earthbound, corrupt, time and space limited bodies expressly for the purpose of learning important lessons through the nitty-gritty of everyday life so that we will ultimately be made into His image and likeness.

So, I suppose what I want to leave with you Nodrama, is that we are all related spiritually to one Father, regardless if we were raised by our natural parents or parents who adopted us. You are my sister spiritually whether you or I like it or not. I would prefer immensely that it would be that we both "like it."

I hope the little that I have written may be of some help and encouragement to you?

Have a great day, and may God bless you and your loved ones richly in terms of health, joy, peace, love and many other positive things.

Hi Cryptkeeper,
So, I agree with the fact I might be a bit ocd. I think I'm more of an anxious person though with GAD.
The rolling thoughts is a problem for me. As long as I take medicine for it I'm able to mostly stop those.  I wonder if it's not I'm trying to prove that I'm normal so to speak. I've always felt abnormal or like an outsider due to being adopted. Like I'm an Oprah show or something.  Oh it's just so different....the adopted daughter....so interesting like a new pet.

Thoughts?

Hi Nodrama,

I'm certainly no expert in these matters, but I can see why this might occur in your case.

First, please allow me to give you a closely-related analogy.  I am currently writing a book entitled "The Stigma of Mental Illness - Been There, Am There...Maybe I Could Help?"  Now, when I am writing content for this book, it is somewhat therapeutic for me as i do suffer and have suffered from mental illness.  But, on the other hand (and this is where the analogy to your situation comes in), I get depressed myself and upset, especially with all the misunderstanding and cold-hearted comments (i.e. stigma) from people towards mentally ill people, while they themselves have never suffered a moment of mental illness in their lives, some of whom are my own family members.

The other thing I might throw out there for you to consider as a possible cause is this: You may suffer from what I have, which is obsessive compulsive behavior or disorder.  So, you "fixate" as your friend suggests. It's like you can't change your thoughts or your mind, no matter how hard you try to, and you continuously play back what you have just watched or read over and over and over again.  You see these other people struggling, and then you feel a connection with them. You have an affinity (are sympathetic) with their struggle.

Finally, there is a popular saying, which might be applicable here in your case as well: "Misery Loves Company."  Not saying this has anything to do with "misery," but I am saying that the expression can be interpreted to mean that, as I wrote above, people who are going through the same struggle tend to flock together."

My two cents worth.

I have a question for you all...I have a friend that noticed that I have in the past tended to binge/relapse whenever I read or watch stories of people that are really struggling or are in the middle of some type of spiral. She said that she's noticed I almost fixate on it and then within days I over do it.  What do you think is causing this and have you found it true in your lives?
