Hi K,

The important thing to take away from the afternoon are the positives; you didn't go on a tear the next day and you maintained you control when you were at the restaurant. That's progress. Pay very close attention to any escalation in your drinking and stay focused on the longer periods of abstinence. You're doing great! keep going.

All the best,

Dave

Hi K,

Slips are very common and can even be considered part of the learning process. What did you learn from this slip? How can you prevent a slip like this in the future?

Fortunately for me after I entered the fellowship of AA and working the 12 steps, the obsession to drink never came back. I am not sure whether you keep constanly thinking about drinking or staying away from alcohol, but from what you posted, I see you are experiencing the "phenomenon of craving" once in a while. What we mean by that is, once in a while, you can't control the amount of alcohol you consume once you drink a couple of drinks. Normal people never experience this. They consistantly stick to 1 or 2 drinks occassionally. You may want to read more about alcoholism at

http://www.aa.org/assets/en_US/en_bigbook_chapt3.pdf.

I know most people visualize an alcoholic as a skid row person but to be a alcoholic (functional) you don't have to lose all. There are many who don't realize that they have gone past a stage where self will alone will not work. They are bound to go back to alcohol. They think they are in control but they are not.

Haven't been posted in a bit... It's been 3 months and been successful in my view point of staying sober. I've had a few drinks on the weekend 3 max maybe once or twice tops in the past few weeks. However, I had a slip up went out to a restaurant with a friend and had some beers drank from 4 in the afternoon till midnight. Didn't get totally intoxicated but was probably drinking about 1 an hour... I know I was 8 or 9 beers. Felt bad the next day... and but didn't really think about drinking the next day like I use to. I dunno just venting and feel ok. But wanted to hear about other slip ups and there handling?
