Welcome justAnnie,

I am glad you found us. It sounds like you are ready for this change. Start by reading through the program and using the keyword search to find discussions that pertain to you in the forums. Be sure to check in often - the more you put into this forum, the more you get out.

That's great that you have tried to cut back before. That means you have some experience and with experience comes wisdom. What is two things you learned from your last attempts at cutting back?

Also, how did the other day go?

Thanks Foxman and Dave... I'm proud to say that I start day 3 today :)  I'm not sure it's realistic but my goal would be not to drink at all at home during the week or when I'm alone.  So I will not have a drink until Sunday when I play hockey.  After hockey, I usually have 2 beers with the girls.  I'm really hoping that this is attainable.  If not, I will have to stop drinking all together.  It's only been 2 days and despite the 5PM urge to pour myself a glass of wine, I feel and have slept so much better.

Today will be a rough day because my ex is coming by to pick up random stuff left at my place and bring mine.
I will make it through today and stay away from the wine but I know that I'll have every excuse in the book to not after our visit.

Thanks for reading... If you are in Canada, Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi Annie,

Welcome to the site. It sounds like a good time to make a positive change and put this behind you. There are a lot of great resources out there. Lance Dodes, MD has written a few really good books on the subject.

This site is an excellent resource. I found it to instrumental in getting through this challenge (15 months for me). You'll find the members here to be very understanding and responsive from all sorts of angles.

Post lots and stay in touch

All the best,

Dave

Hi, My drinking is out of hand and it's time to change... This isn't the first time that I attempt to cut down or stop drinking so I know that the road ahead will not be an easy one but I have to do this. I've known for a long time that I drink too much but recently, after a break up, I realized how my drinking is affecting my life. I was in a long distance relationship that was rocky and although my drinking was a secret, it didn't help in some of the evening phone/Skype/text conflicts. So I've decided that I have to take control of what I can control and decided that it's time to put the wine glass away when I woke up Saturday morning. I've got 24 hours under my belt and now I'm getting ready to face another day. Yesterday wasn't easy so I imagine that today will be similar. Can anyone recommend reading material that might help? I really want to succeed and know that I can but I could use some help. Thanks, Annie
