Moderation Gang (MoGa) - an ongoing discussion of moderate drinking

Work can be a significant source of chronic stress.  I'm glad to hear that you both have sought options on how to handle the situation, whether to leave or seek legal support.
As you are well aware, drinking does not alleviate this stress.  Stay strong and focused on your health goals.
A mini trampoline sounds like a fun way to help not only alleviate stress, but stay fit and distracted from the urge to drink!
Keep it up!

Camiol,

I too understand how work can drive you over the edge, one way or another.  It can be so overwhelming, especially when the money you are earning is absolutely crucial.
I too detest my job, (well, there is a tiny bit of it that is ok....mainly that I am nowhere near any bosses! lol)
Other than that it is bad.

It sounds like you are doing what you can to alleviate the problem as quickly as you can.  Meanwhile you mentioned there are workmates who feel as you do.  That can be a great comfort.  I would also document all of your stuff just in case you ever need it.  You just never know and having stuff logged down in writing can make all the difference when needed.  Plus it just helps to validate your feelings.  You can actually see you're not the crazy one.

My job sends me out of town and makes ME pay for gas, use my vehicle to carry their stuff, and pay for my own food, which of course costs at least 2x's as much on road, and makes me pay for my own hotel to stay while I work.  lol
it's true.  I had never heard of anything so crazy before, but I was desperate for work, beyond desperate actually.
So, I took it.
Some weeks I simply break even....now how is that for crazy....work all week at a hard job for nothing!  it is true.

I will tell you though, I did contact an attorney about this as I thought their practices were illegal as I am an employee not an independent contractor.  Anyway, I may or may not pursue that but I set an appt. to talk about it anyway.

Meanwhile I continue to hunt for another avenue of work.

It sounds like you may be trapped inside an office with someone ( a boss?) who is out of control and they can make your life a living hell.

About exercise, I mentioned I use that trampoline thing, the small ones, wow they are very good at stemming "urges" to drink...., I don't know how, but it happens almost immediately.  I am out of shape so I can only do it for a few seconds, yes, you read that right, seconds! b4 I must stop but it really helps and is easy.  They cost around 35-45 dollars.  I had actually sold my other one becuase I was so broke!  But I got a new one and I drug it with me on the road.  I knew I would need it this trip.  Maybe that could help.

I am so glad you wrote and shared about your work because it is so helpful to read that another person is feeling that way too, just like you said.

I wish you great success!

Camiol, you are not kidding about the impact of job stress.

I agree Shiobhan, exercise is very important, I just can't seem to get motivated.  I think about it, I want to do it, but I can't seem to get rear in gear.  I need to find my motivation and get back on track.

I didn't drink last night,  It was a bit tough, I kept thinking about how nice a sangria would be, but I didn't let myself cave in.  I also realized that when I'm not stressed from work, the urgency to drink is not overwhelming me.  In realizing this, it has made me see that I truly do need to find a way out of that department or the company altogether.  There was no tension or upset that was making me want to drink the frustration away.  Yes I wanted a drink, but not in the same way I do when I come home from work and I was able abstain because I wasn't tied in knots.

ElizabethRRRR you will get find your way back, you have the desire and that's important to your success.  I know it's not easy, it's been a long hard struggle for all of us.  We can do this with determination and commitment.  I believe we are all here on this site because we want to change.  We falter, but we keep trying and that's what matters.

So glad to see someone mention exercise.  I am positive that is what I need and what will keep me sober!  I intend to start a new program when I get home.  Meanwhile, I brought my mini trampoline with me in my hotel.  I have used it and immediately feel a tremendous relief!  yahoo.

I have fallen so far out of my goals for so long that I have wondered if there is ever a way back. My husband and I were remembering our early days when we would split a beer a night and that was it, because that was all we could afford. And now... but I know there's a way back and I thank you all for encouraging me to have hope.

Camiol, throw in the towel, throw whatever, but just keep moving. You will conquer this.

Exercise is the key, whatever form it takes. Walk around the block, dance, move somehow.

Good to hear.

Keep us updated and please take care of yourself. Stress really can and does change a person (temporarily)

Hi Ashley....I think throwing in the towel would make my life so much simpler.  I'm so stressed out all the time.  It's making me turn into someone I'm not.  I am miserable at home because I hate my job so much.  I can't be there for my family in every way because I'm drinking.  I am definitely going on a leave (which will get me fired) if it looks like there isn't an opportunity in the other dept.  I was going to wait til April, but I don't think I can let it go on that much longer.  I'm literally feeling like I could hit that woman and I am far from being a violent person.  I know that if my life was less stressful and overwhelming, I wouldn't feel the need to drink in order to cope.  I know that being out of that place won't make the alcoholism go away, but I think it would certainly help me to cope much better and hopefully make it easier for me to quit.

I like the idea of yoga and meditation, I actually have yoga videos that I should dust off and start using them again.  My body is in terrible knots all the time, the stretching would certainly help alleviate the tense muscles.  I am going to try your suggestion....thanks Ashley.
