Wow!

Congrats to both Big John and Smiles.

The fact you both quit once for as long as you did means that you both learned how to quit successfully.  That means you can do it again.  I look forward to the day when I can say that I have learned how to quit successfully.  And I look forward to hearing more from you both on your journeys :)

Big John,

I could have written your post myself. I too thought after years of NOT drinking that I could "just" have wine with dinner! Well that worked out OK for quite a while (18 months) but as you can see here I am on this site looking to get back to where I was 3 years ago..... not drinking. Funny how a glass of wine turns into a bottle which then turns into many bottles  & before you know it ............any alcohol in the house!! Really wish I could have held onto the managing my intake that I did sooooo well with for sooooo long but as you said, the demon is back & with a vengeance !!

I have recognized it again & I have been working really hard over this last month to keep it in check. A few slip ups (5 out of 26 days) but I am feeling more in control again!! I too am into a very active healthy (other than over doing wine) lifestyle which helped me maintain for over 7 years! I am confident with the help of this site that I can get back there!!

Seems like there is great support here!!

Glad to hear John!

Isn't it amazing what can happen when we are honest with ourselves?! It takes a lot of courage but how else can we get what we REALLY want? And it sounds to me like what you really want is a healthy life. It actually sounds like a very important value of yours.

Sounds like your in the perfect head space to succeed! Be present to that and keep going!

I am feeling better about myself already.  I just read what I posted earlier today and the truth can set you free.  Just admitting these things to myself is part of healing.  I found out that I can olny lie to myself when I don't admitt how much I drank for how bad I feel afterwards.  Now I must take my time and recover properly again.  I workout schedule is off this week because my body is still recovering from the weekend wine binge.  I can olny image how I would feel if I have started drinking the hard stuff again.

As I might have mentioned.  So many people that I know who continued to drink heavily in there 50s 60s are now dead because of lifestyle choices.  It's something for me to take very serious because my family history is filled with alcholoics and bad habits.  So far my past two years has soon me that there is a good and healthy life available to thows who try.

Good luck!

Thank you for spreading the word!  And please do so. We don't have a Facebook page set up yet for the AHC as we are not sure how many people would be willing to "like" it and out their anonymity but we do have a Facebook page from the Stop Smoking Center - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Stop-Smoking-Center/270540629706688 - By liking this page and spreading the word it encourage friends to check out our other sites Just an idea.

It sounds like you have all the tools required to tackle this! Looking forward to sharing the journey with you.

Thank you Ashley, what a nice thing to say.  It does feel good to take control of myself again.  I don't feel like I am lossing control of my habits.  Because, I spent so much time creating new habits to counter drinking to deal with problems and stress.  I just don't like the physical discomfort that comes with falling off the wagon.

Thanks for your continued support.  I have so many other (retired military friends) who need to use this site or find something to help them stop their bad behavior also.  Wish my luck in spreading the word about your website and all the great work that you do.

Hi BigJohn,

Welcome back. Good for you for recognizing so quickly that a problem was reoccuring and coming back here to get support.  That takes strength. It sounds like you have learned a very important lesson about yourself too. You can no longer be a socail drinker. Now you know what it takes to stay completely alcohol free.

I can hear that you do not like the feeling of losing control while drinking. Well, how does it feel to be taking control of this now?

Hi everyone,

I have returned to this site because of the great support I recieved 2 years ago when is was down and binge-drinking.  I some how thought that I could re-introduce myself to social drinking by enjoying food and wine.  We after 2 weeks of Sunday brunchs with white wine spritzers.  I thought everything was under control.  Boy how wrong was I...  This past weekend I drank 2 large bottles of white wine and 2 small bottles of red.  Some with food others just for the taste of alcohol.  The deamon is back.  I can't just be a social drinker.  This experience has shown me that I can not  drink at all.  I had a headach, upset stomach, and missed one day work.  I haven't experienced anything like this in over two years.  Ocotober 1 would have been three years sober.

Now I am starting over again one day at a time.  I don't like the feeling of lossing control when I drink.  I have already lost two of the most influential people who started my drinking leassons. Both of them have past away due to lifestyle and medical complications.   Other people who live near me and contiued to drink after I stopped have also died because of drinking related heath issues, too.  I know the risk of living an unhealthy lifestyle at my age (52).
