Hi LittlT,

Thank you for your post.

I encourge you to talk your doctor(s), about your stress fractures and alchol consumption. They would be able to advise you on if they two are related and what steps you can take.

I see this thread is a lil old, but the subject is near and dear to me.  I work out (cardio & strength training) 5 days almost every week for the better part of 20 years and, in recent years, when my alcohol intake has climbed to an uncontrollable level, I have had numerous issues with stress fractures.  I used to average running between 35 & 40 miles a week and have since cut back due to these problems.  My General Practitioner is aware of my drinking problems, but my sports medicine specialist is not.  I have not been told by either that the 2 (alcohol and my bone health) are related, but I can't deny the coincidence and I honestly believe it is completely attributable to my drinking.

I haven't but one thing that saves me is I eat very weel and I do weight training twice per week. I started this many years ago because I had juvenile arthritis. So even if I drink too much one night, which is happening too often again, I will train the next morning anyway. And if I drank too much the night before I will just remind myself it would have been so much easier to exercize if I had not drink. I am a strong believer in weight training

OK... thanks for the reminder.  For some reason, I need... like... "permission" to not try to fix everything all at once.... "permission" to focus on one thing and not multi-task myself ... into failure.

That is right.  For now focus on one goal at a time.  Behaviour change is not easy especially when you are potentially dealing with an addiction.  Exercise and eating right will help you feel better while cutting back or abstaining but if it is too much for you focus on the alcohol reduction.

Thanks for bringing this point up M and Truffle.

Hello Athena,

Has your doctor made suggestions on how to improve your bone density? As he mentioned your alcohol consumption is directly related to your weakened bone density, nutrition and amount of physical activity can also play a big part in this.

Keep us posted on how you are going to work hard to strengthen your bone density.

yup... osteopenia (sp) is what they call it here.  Dr. told me to quit smoking & drinking.  I was able to quit smoking this summer but not having so much success with quitting drinking.  I've broken a lot of bones in the last couple of years :(  but I sure hate taking those horse pill sized calcium tablets <sigh> and I'm not real fond of giving up the drink but I'm trying... i'm trying.

I have been diagnosed with borderlien osteoperosis even though I am 47.  My doctor says that it is related to my alcohol use.  Has anyone else had this problem?
