Can medication help that much?

Really having a hard time deciding what to do about whether to go on medication or not. My question is how exactly does it change your thoughts? By just numbing you or what? For example the bruise I found on my leg sends me into a panic. Let's say I'm on some type of medication I see the bruise- there's no bad feelings? What? Someone explain this to me...
