Alcoholic vs. binge drinker?

Thanks for your responses.

I guess in the end, the label doesn't matter.  We have to each try to do what's best for ourselves.  For me that is cutting out alcohol, maybe forever, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Tasha,

I think that binge drinker and alcoholic are pretty synonymous. I don't know about you but neither of these terms sound nice to me! I can tell you that from my personal experience, I would binge drink pretty much every weekend. My only hope was to eliminate alcohol altogether; however, down the road I may allow myself to have a drink here and there I still haven't decided. I can't tell you what to do or anything, but that's what I had to do to stop experiencing terrible weekends full of mistakes, tears, anger and so much more negativity. I nearly lost my boyfriend and several friends by being the way i was before. I am so much happier these days, I am proud of who I have become and I know that whats in the past is in the past. I know that my boyfriend has forgiven me, but noone forgets. And if I ever jeopardize things again, it will be my fault. So i choose to be sober...and you can too!

Here for you!

Hi Tasha,

You're the only person who can decide if you want to moderate your drinking, cut down, or quit drinking completely. But we can help you with your decision – and we're also aware that decisions (or goals) can change. This program is not just about quitting drinking – however some of the exercises in the program are designed to help those who are quitting (or abstaining) alcohol. There are also people in our support group who have decided to abstain, while there are others who just want to cut down. We support everyone.

Is a binge drinker a nice way of saying you're an alcoholic?  I was under the impression that if you cannot stop at one drink because your mind/body craves more, you are an alcoholic.  I also thought that the only real option for alcoholics was to cut out drinking completely - forever.  I am curious of what the success rates are for people who used to binge drink and now cut themselves off after one drink.  I can go for ages without drinking, but when I do drink I have a need to get drunk...everytime.  If I could eliminate this overwhelming urge after one drink I'd sure like to know how.
