Hey Steelroots, what your saying makes a lot of sense to me. Everytime I tried to quit I always watched my weight at the same time. I've been smoke free for 143 days and I have not gained weight. I've been exercising a lot more since my quit. I think if I were to gain to much weight I would also want to start smoking again.
For me quitting smoking and exercising go hand in hand. I don't think I would be able to quit without the exercises, I find it releives a lot of anxiety. 
I also try not to replace food with cigarettes cause I think we could become addicted to food cause food is comforting.

My mindset and opinion is different in regards to smoking and increased eating causing weight gain.  Also, have a different opinion on NRT.  This is my OPINION and view point of MY personal experiences.

I've quit smoking more times than I care to even think about and all the quits until this last one (April 9, 2010) I always used NRT or took a class, got a shot, gum, patches, lozenges and Chantix. This last time I went Cold Turkey and I've done better and feel better than any of the dozens of times before.  It's been hard and I'm still struggling but everything considered this time has been much better in every way.  

As far as the weight gain, I never stayed quit long enough to gain weight except when I took Chantix and I quit 7 months and gained about 35 lbs.  I don't want or need the extra weight and I'm not trading quitting smoking for eating.  I've never had an issue or problem with my weight and I'm not going to start now.  Everyone I know that is obese and overweight for their age, frame and height have a lot more health issues than I do.

I believe it is better to keep my weight in check while I'm quitting smoking instead of getting thru quitting cigarettes and then having a food addiction that I have to work on.  Maybe I'm crazy but I would rather have my nicotine addiction versus weight or food addiction.  Just don't see the purpose or any good to exchange one problem or issue for a new or different problem or issue.

We all do what we have to do to accomplish our goals, needs and wants.  Been there and done that many times and this is where I'm at for now.

When I first quit smoking, I was soooo worried about gaining weight.  I shared this with a friend who had been quit for several years and she said, "I had to accept that I might weigh a little more than I'd like if I quit smoking."  That statement was powerful to me.  First of all she is an attractive woman who is NOT overweight.  I realized that my quit had to be the number one priority for me.  Yes, I did try to increase my exercising, but then I hurt my back and stopped that,  overall I gained 10 pounds from my quit.  I just celebrated my one year recently and am now ready to tackle the weight issue.   The MOST important thing that I personally had to do was realize that smoking was not going to make any problem go away, not even weight.  I recently have felt more solid in my quit and have joined WW. You have a good outlook!  Keep your sites focused on the quit and in the meantime try these tips to help you maintain and even lose weight without thinking about it.
 
Drink more water
Eat smaller portions
Do a clean out of the cupboard (all the bad stuff goes)
Buy fresh veggies and fruits
 
Start walking!  The summer nights are great for walking with your significant other or friend!
 
You will do this, keep focused!

Gimm, it is really common to gain about 9 pounds or so when we quit smoking. Our metabolisms slow down. Our heart rates, for instance, drop, because it doesn't have to wok as hard and use as much energy. I gained about 9 pounds when I quit smoking and lost it. However, I was already fat when I quit smoking. I've seriously undertaken a program to change my diet and lose weight a few months ago. The first month I lost 3 pounds. Since then, May 1st, I've lost 20. I waited to make sure that I was comfortable in my quit first before taking on another problem. I first tried to lose weight in November and wasn't quite ready. I am now. However, staying smoke-free still and always will have priority. I was told by my doctor that I would have to gain about 70 pounds to be in the same shape that I was in while smoking. Plus, I blew a long quit once when the pressure struck, and I had few tools, and decided to smoke rather than eat. Frankly, it is easier to lose weight than it is to quit smoking. Quitting smoking has to be done perfectly--no relapses; no slips for some of us. I lost 3.8 pounds last week even though I went on a picnic and ate so much that my aunt told me to get away from the table. Granted, I now exercise my butt off and normally only eat 1300-1400 calories a day. Once I lose the weight, I'll continue to eat a Mediterranean diet, but kick the calorie count up to about 1800. I'll work that out with my dietitian later.

The weight gain has been a problem for the last 2 years while I have been trying to quit.  With each failed quit attempt I gained about 10 pounds that is a total of 40 now.  One thing I can say for sure going back to smoking never helped me loose the weight, and only made it worse, plus each time I was a smoker again and had gain another 10 pounds I couldn't lose.  I have decided I will not go back to smoking because I am gaining weight, ever again.  I am quite upset about the weight gain and am hoping I don't gain any more.  I don't think I could live with myself if I went back to smoking because I know smoking will not help me lose the weight in my case.  I plan on going over to the sister site when I get 30 days under my belt so I can start working on loosing some weight.  I also understand being that I am a 55 year old female who is post menopausal keeping the weight off is harder and than add in quiting nicotine makes it tougher.  That's what my doctor told me anyway.  He said I would have to really work at it to just now gain weight at this stage in my life.  So for now I am just going to work at not gaining any more weight.  Smoking Will Not help me loose weight.  I have to remember this because it is true and tell myself this everyday.  N.O.P.E.  Smoking Never Fixes or Helps Anything.

totally demoralised.... in the 4 years that I've been quit I gained 28lbs, lost 21 lbs and then put it back on again!!! Rubbish!
