Attempt #2475

Hi MiguelSantana,

I would say if you could avoid drinking initially that would be ideal. I would say that smoking only while drinking, while you are trying to quit would be extremely difficult and probably result in a relapse. However, if you just feel like cutting back is all you can commit to right now that is ok. Every cigarette you don't smoke is helpful. These is no rush to make a commitment though. Just keep working on it and thinking about it. How do you think you will know when you are ready to quit?

Obrigado Ashley! :) Yes, the binge eating mechanism in particular is giving me quite a headache... I hope I will be able to return eating in a balanced way today, because these past few days have just been... crazy. Regarding the 6-month period, I guess the most important lesson is that the "I'll just smoke this one" doesn't work; as soon as I said that, I was back smoking again. Still, I am quite afraid of committing to such a radical plea, because I know that when I go out at night and drink it is be almost impossible not to smoke. Is that too bad?

Hello precious! Way to go on your commitment and many congrats on being pregnant :) From my experience, one really does feel much better after quitting; all the guilt and bad feelings vanish and you'll soon find you'll feel physically better. I am absolutely confident you'll make it, specially since you have such a strong incentive - you'll be saving two lives now! Just be aware that it is a difficult journey with many ups and downs, but with the right motivation it is definitely not unsurmountable.

Just wanted to comment before I go to sleep. I myself have smoked for 10 years and smoke about 15 a day normally. I have cut back recently though but some days I still have a decent amount. I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone in your quit. I am right there with you and am so determined since I have to. I found out I am pregnant not too long ago. I wish you so much luck and maybe we can help to support each other through this. I have to go to bed but when I have more energy, I will be back to finish those steps myself. I can't wait til I can get away from these nasty things and keep them out of my life for good and forever.

Welcome Miguel,

Parabéns para começar! Great work on tackling this head on. It sounds like a big part of your quit plan will be finding alternative coping mechanisms for the anxiety and binge eating. Finding alternative ways to cope with triggers will be a big part of you getting well. If you would like to work on your anxiety through Cognitive Behaviour Therapy I encourage you to check our sister site www.panicccenter.net.

It is fantastic that you have had a 6 month quit prior to this. What did you learn from that experience?

Hey guys,

My name is Miguel, I am Portuguese, and I've had my last cigarette yesterday. This is another of my attempts to stop smoking, but I really want this to be the one. I am 22 years old, I've been smoking for almost 4 years now, and I started smoking in order to cope with binge eating and high levels of anxiety. I smoke 10+ cigarettes per day. True, I have already made it without smoking for like 6 months once and it did not kill me, but my life is increasingly stressful and I am really afraid of doing this; anyway, I really do not want to deliberately shorten my life, have a painful death, and not have enough money to go out not even once a month.
This is the first time I join a support community, and I will try to be as active as possible - this MUST be my last attempt.

Cheers,
Miguel
