Stopped Smoking on 9th Febuary, 2014

Well Tipu, like you, I am in the first category.

But, I couldn't give up for my loved ones; I had to give up for myself first and foremost. Those closest to me benefited as a by-product of my actions to quit.

I firmly believe that it is nigh on impossible to quit if you don't really want to.

@Penitent: Very well. Thank you.

20th February, 2014: Received X-Ray and blood test reports today. Cholesterol is high and X-Ray report shows interstitial marking on lungs caused by smoking. As per doctor, it may take month to get my lungs 99% repaired. So, I need to start running. In evening today, i walked a mile from my home and came back. While walking, i had chest pain but when i was coming back to my home, chest pain decreased significantly. Right now, while I am on bed and writing this, there is no pain.

So what is plan for next 7 days? Walk, run, drink alot of water, avoid oily food and try to breath fresh air by waking up early in morning.

Guys when we talk about leaving smoking then have you ever thought seriously who are these people? I have categorized them into two:

Those who have something to lose: That something can be your family, your friends, your wife, your children or your beloved. If you do not want to leave them, then you should quit smoking right NOW. Who knows your next single puff of cigarette proves lethal for you?
Those who have lost everything: If you have no one in this world to take care of then you are wrong. There is always one person to whom you should take care all the time. That's YOU. You should fear death. If you are not fearing death, then it means you are not following some religion. It is always better to follow some religion to keep yourself bound into limits.

I would love to hear your opinion on this? I belong to first category.

19th February: Today lab guys took my blood sample. I said, ok this is the first test, what about rest of 2? They said all 3 tests (CBC, LFTs and Fasting Liquid Profile) only require a blood sample. Reports will be available tomorrow morning.

Tips:
  1. Guys, though I don't have a cough now but sometimes whenever I have random cough, I try not to cough hard. Lesson learned already that coughing hard will damage your lungs and stomach muscles.
  2. I have been drinking alot of water. Not too much water that it might have bad effect on my kidneys. Everything is good in proportion.
  3. If you have pain in chest, try to change your side or location or move your body. If it goes, then you are safe. This means it was a muscular pain. If pain is constant and happens on a single point only, you need to get this checked on serious basis.
  4. Chest X-RAY is always a good way to find what is going on with your chest but do get the detailed result of X-RAY. It usually takes 2-3 days for labs to get you the detailed result. Doctor will only give you initial remarks by looking at X-RAY but you can count only on what lab reports say.

Hey Tipu!

     Welcome to the SSC!  You have made a wise decision to quit smoking after only 3 years!  You are much wiser than many of us here who smoked for not years, but decades! Your health will improve greatly and your chance of more crippling diseases will decrease significantly, if not completely disappear!  Look at you!!!  You have completed Hell Week and are well on your way to becoming free from a terrible addiction!

     I would like to recommend that you continue going through the Program!  The information will help you continue to remain smoke free.  Read through the different posts on the Forums, too.  There is a lot of valuable information contained here from hundreds of great quitters that may also come in handy some day!  Stick close and post for help if you need it!  We are all rooting for you!

@Ashley: I do not have any choice actually. Fear of death and love of my family is the key motivation. Also I am not fortunate enough to get married yet :P, so I definitely plan to get married in a year or two.
@Penitent: You are very right. I have no more left to smoke anyway but getting my health back is another key point in distraction from getting back to smoking.
@Whisper: Brother, I am asking GOD for only one more chance this time and I won't smoke again :)
@Working On It: Chest X-RAY is clear but shows pneumonia in past. Doctor said pneumonia was the real cause I was coughing so bad which actually got my lungs and stomach muscles damaged.
@Lolly 2: I really appreciate your support.

18th February: Chest pains have dropped from 80% to 50% now. Stomach pains have also dropped but not as much. So, I went to the stomach expert doctor today to get the stomach examined. She said to get the CBC, LFTs and Fasting Liquid Profile test tomorrow.

Dear Tipu,

I'm so happy for you that your chest pains were not from a more sinister reason!!!  Sensible you for going to a doctor!  Congratulations on your first 9 days quit!

You may experience many other niggling pains and aches as you progress in your quit.  It is indeed your body healing, and just shows us how much damage we did to ourselves by smoking. As Penitent says, don't look too far ahead, just take one day at a time.  You have made such an important decision to stop at an early stage...just imagine 10, 20, 30, 40 years of smoking, and what that does!

Good for you coming on here to help others!  It will inspire and educate others, and it may help you to keep your focus on the prize of being smoke-free.

Whatever it takes, just don't smoke!!!

Love Lolly.

Hi Tipu,

Congratulations on your quit. You were wise to se a Dr. Sounds like you will heal up well. And you get the added bonus of knowing you don't have lung cancer. Nice!

Be sure to stick around, read, and post as needed. We like to celebrate successes around here.

Congratulations on 8 days quit Tipu.

In some ways, your chest issue may well have distracted you from the mental agony of the early days of quitting that many experience.

Do what you have to do to get your lungs fixed and just try to maintain that quit, day by day. Do not look too far ahead!

Good Luck!
Penitent
