Hey Ausra!!!

Congratulations on deciding to regain your freedom once again!  We are very happy that you are here, too, and want nothing more than to help you make this your forever quit!  Working On It and many of the rest of us had some of those same feelings of giving up a friend when we quit smoking, but eventually snap out of it and realize that the nico-demon is NOT our friend!  That sucker is out to rob us of our hard earned money and wants nothing more than to kill us!    It really is good therapy to write a good-bye letter to that so-called friend and tell it exactly what you think of it!    My letter was filled with a LOT of bleeps!!!

Stick close and let us know if we can be of any help to you on your journey to freedom!  We are all rooting for you!

Hi Ausra,

I also mourned the loss of my "best friend" when I quit. Like you, I related to cigarettes as something that would be there for me when life was tough. Ashley (Health Educator here) suggested that I write a eulogy to smoking, and that was a helpful exercise for me. Even though I was still quite fond of my old buddy in my writing, something about it helped me to let go.

As I was reading this, I was also wondering what that eulogy would look like now. I don't think I would be so fond of smoking today. Cigarettes were a very demanding friend, requiring my attention about 20 times per day, costing me money wherever we went, and not even giving me time alone when I was sick. Not to mention the facts that they kept me from having so many other friends--people who are allergic to or dislike smoke who couldn't hang around me much---and kept many of the friends I had at a distance.

With that being said, welcome to the boards. I wish you strength in these first days of your journey. As you know, they are the hardest ones, and life will get easier as time goes on.

Welcome Ausra,

Feeling like you are losing your best friend is actually very normal. Many quitters here have talked about feeling this way. It is not easy but like with any relationship it is important to mourn the loss. It is ok and even healthy that you feel a bit sad now. The dancing and celebration will occur later - I promise. Like a bad breakup you will get over it and you will feel stronger then ever.

Since you feel comforted by smoking when you feel sad try to practice old and new behaviours when you feel sad to sooth yourself. For example, instead of smoking a cigarette when you feel sad go for a walk taking deep, clean breaths or meditate. What are some other ways to cope that you think could work for you?

Hi everyone,

my name is Ausra and I am 28. I used to smoke about 7 years and I was free about 1 year. Then I relapsed thinking that I'll quit very soon and easy. Next try to quit was after more than 3 years, five days ago... I'm trying cold turkey. And my boyfriend is helping me - he is quitting too. I really understand what smoking did for me. But something's wrong in my mind because I feel I'm loosing my best friend, my support... The book 'Easy way to stop smoking' helps me a little but it's still painful. You know... I didn't enjoy smoking when I was happy. I enjoyed it when I felt loneliness, depression, despair. I know that it didn't help me but I have lot of associations with it. I don't have smoking friends, I want to be fit, workout every day, I completely understand everything and try to remember my happy one year when I was non-smoker! I'm thinking about this and I'm crying at the same time. Now I live only with hope that maybe after one month I'll feel better. I'd like to happy, to sing, to dance the beginning of my nicotine free life! But it's not so easy... So reading stories or thoughts of others is very big support for me. Thank you all.
