Thanks for all the info and encouragement. I'm on day 14 today with just the gum and inhaler. Unfortunately I couldn't tolerate the patch. My family doctor is part of a family health team at the local hospital and he encouraged me to see their pharmacist who is smoking cessation counsellor. She got me onto the NRTs and checks up on me and keeps me motivated.  She also provided me with this website which I have found very helpful.  I have an additional major motivator to stay quit and that is that my mother was recently diagnosed with invasive bladder cancer due to 60 years of smoking.  Spending 2 to 3 days at the cancer centre of our local hospital every week is a very sad but powerful motivator to never light up again.  I hope I can remain focused and committed.  I truly think I can this time around.

No problem Working On It!  We get asked a lot of questions about medication on the boards - it's only natural to hope we can provide an answer. But due to legalities we cannot give medical advice.

Hi Dori,

Congratualtions on day 6 now!

If you have questions regarding dosage please talk to your pharmacist or doctor. Health Educators are not able to give advice on medication.

What motivated you to come to the site? What is motivating you to quit now?

Hi dori

Congrats on been 5 days!!!
NRT usually have instructions about weaning off over the course of 3 months, at week 3/4 you should reduce the amount or strenght of the patch, then again at week 7/8 and again at 11/12 weeks. at the end of this you should have weaned off nicotine and mastered the skill to remain smoke free.

You can do it, as will I.

Hi dori, and congratulations on beginning your quit.

I don't know how much you smoked before or what your Dr. has recommended, but that seems like a lot of nicotine replacement. Hopefully, you aren't getting more nicotine than before you quit. In order to be sure how much to use and how to slowly taper it off, you might want to consult with a medical specialist. I only used one product (lozenges), and it was still a bit confusing for me to figure out what was going on with nicotine levels.

A health educator here did help by finding out how much nicotine was in one lozenge, so I could do some calculations for myself. Health educators, do you guys have answers for dori?

I'm on day 5 using the patch, gum and inhaler.  Day 2 and 3 were absolute hell even with the NRTs but it's sure worth it.  My lungs feel better and I have more energy already. Hopefully this time around it will be for life.  Anyone have suggestions as to when and by how much you start cutting down on the NRTs?
