Myth or Fact? Quitting is Expensive

13 years ago 0 331 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I agree that at first it seems as though quitting is just as expensive.  I did the patch for 9 weeks and it was pricey.  I also bought about $30 in gum and hard candies.  It was about the same cost involved but the end result is priceless.  Once you go off the NRT then you are definitely saving money.  I now take the money I save from not smoking and put that towards other fun and exciting purchases.  I don't let my money go up in smoke anymore.

Quitting was just as expensive as smoking was for 6 months .  I used NRTs and they cost me about the same as I spent on smoking.

It's a myth. Not even close. One of the reasons I decided to stop smoking is that we were out on the water and after exhausting my usual 2 packs of cigarettes for the day I needed to get more. I realised that I only had 11 dollars on me and had to borrow 2 dollars to get a pack as they were $12.50 a pack then. I hear now that a pack is 14 dollars on my Island. One of my rewards was to put away a couple hundred dollars a month and have been doing that since I quit. Smoking used to be my biggest monthly expense. More than housing , more than food , and more than gas. It took everything I had and then some. I know it would have eventually taken my life if I didn't stop. I breathe a lot easier today ,  hardly ever cough and for that I'm grateful. Smoking is a 25 dollar a day addiction that I no longer buy into. Cold turkey = $0 , a new life priceless. breather

  • Allen Carr book $30

  • New Motorbike for Mr & Mrs Kiwi for touring = $ 14,000
  • Motorbike #2 for work commute = $ 3,000
  • DIY projects around the house = $ 1,500
  • Paying off the Car = $ 3,000

Glad for the topic!
I really did think that quitting was expensive when I was still smoking.  What I have found out is that by quitting I save so much in ways beyond the actual cost of the cigarettes.  (That alone in my case has been $4759. so far at $4.50 a pack.)  Never in my numerous quit attempts did I spend anywhere near that amount and I used every quit aid known to man and therapy before finally quitting cold turkey.  If I include the associated expenses of smoking, cough drops, breath mints, gum, picking up candy and pop while purchasing cigarettes at the convenience store etc.  Not to mention the savings in health care costs as I no longer see my Dr. numerous times a year.  The quality of life costs.  I could go on and on.  Stopping smoking is actually the most cost effective thing I have done in my adult life.  I am so thankful and grateful to have the Nicodemon off my back.

If you are new, consider the cost of Stop Smoking aides your first reward of many in a life of freedom.

The Saskatchewan Government is covering Zyban and Champix for those who are now trying to quit smoking, so that will help lots of quitters with the cost!
Cigarettes now in Saskatchewan are over $13.00 (+) a pack. That's a lot of money.
They were $9.50 when I quit  and check out how much I have already saved (in less than 4 years).
It is well worth quitting!

Members,

Myth: Quitting is expensive.
Fact: Treatments cost from $3 to $10 a day. A pack-a-day smoker spends almost $3,700 per year. Check with your health insurance plan to find out if smoking cessation medications and/or counseling are covered.
