Newbies,
Here is some information on the most common methods of quitting:
Instruction in Relaxation
What is it? There are many types of relaxation exercises that you can get on CD or DVD, or you can learn relaxation techniques through individual or class instruction.
How does it work? Relaxation is an important part of quitting. There are many approaches to instructing people in relaxation. These include learning deep breathing, meditation or progressive muscle relaxation.
What else should I know? What works for someone else may not work for you. One good way to find out what's best for you is to check the selection at the library and try a CD or DVD that's sounds appealing. The library or your doctor may be able to tell you where you can get instruction in relaxation techniques.
Some cessation programs include relaxation CDs. Remember: relaxation is only part of quitting. If you use a relaxation program, make sure the program also provides the steps necessary to help you plan to quit and cope with temptations.
Audio Programs on CD-ROM or DVD
What are they? There are lots of CDs and DVDs available on how to quit. You can purchase them everywhere: the Internet, the pharmacy, the bookstore…
How do they work? Some give advice on strategies to quit, but most don't. Others are gimmicks that offer a quick fix, with no effort, no cravings and no weight gain. No known product can actually do this. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is!
What else should I know? Some companies base their claims of success on their volume of product sales. These are false claims because they have no way of knowing if anyone who purchased their product actually quit.
