Effect of Classical Music

14 years ago 0 363 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
My bulldog pup Brutus was acting up one day, so I put the tv over to the classical music channel. He immediately stopped attacking my hands and walked over to the other end of the couch and sat down. He cocked his head to one side, then the other, for about 2 minutes, then he laid down, and he fell asleep.
I played and wrote music when I was younger, I have a personal, deep relationship with those fimiliar sounds and notes. Music has power, no doubt about it.

I listen to music almost constantly. It is relaxing. If I ever lost my sense of hearing, it would be a very sad day. I’ve often tell my friends that what I would miss most if I were dying is music.

I love all kinds of music but I love classical for the calming/soothing effect it has on me.  Somehow I feel like I'm in another world when I listen to classical music.  In the middle of the night if I wake I hit the button on my cd player and it starts a classical cd that I have loaded, within 2 or 3 songs I'm back to sleep

When I've had a stressful day at work I'll listen to the classical channel that I have saved on my car radio.  The other types of music leave me feeling too revved up when I'm stressed out.  When I need a "pick me up" I go for the faster pace music but when I need something to soothe my inner being I go for the classical

Members,

Our focus in recent weeks has been on stress management. The positive effects of classical music have been widely studied. Although the consensus that classical music increases intellectual ability in children has not yet been confirmed, it has been shown that music does improve:

-    Stress levels & burnout rates in the workplace
-    Overall mood
-    Behavioral symptoms in older adults with Alzheimer, brain injuries or other cognitive deficits
-    Spending: Stores who play classical music have been shown to have higher sales than those who do not.
-    Crime: In a landmark study, the London Transit System saw a decrease in robberies, assault on workers & vandalism.
-    Retention in college students studying
-    Overall stress levels & decreased anger in individuals with road rage when driving
-    Pain in laboring mothers
-    Singing has also been shown to be beneficial in breathing, mood, self-esteem, stress, anxiety & overall wellness.

What has your experience been with this stress relieving strategy?
