New Non-Smoker

Sam smokeless,

Congratulations on your quit. In my opinion it is one of the best things you will achieve in life if you slay the nicotine monster for good. I am one month free now. The nicotine patch is helping me. My next big milestone is going from 21mg to 14mg patch. I am confident but wary because this is probably my 8th attempt to quit smoking. This site helps me hugely also.

Good luck,

Scruffy.

Congrats on your decision to quit smoking!  Cold Turkey is tough, but there is a number of quitters here that have succeeded with this method.  The cravings will certainly be strong for the first few weeks.  Use ice water, waiting 5 minutes, anything to quit smoking.  If you are concerned about cravings, a NRT might be of help to you too.  Be sure to go through the "my program" link to get a quit program setup.  Good luck, you can do this!

Hi and welcome to our group- Feather dancer gave great advice- yes it not going to be a walk in the park, but it is do-able. We are all proof that it is possible to quit life long addictions, and honestly there is no feeling like being free. Do whatever you think will help make your quit work- if you want to try the hypnosis and you really think it may work for you then go for it. I considered it but here in my area its very very expensive, so I went down the NRT route and that sure worked for me.
I wish you every success, I know that key to my success was the support I got from this web site-SSC. I shared everything I was feeling because I knew that somewhere in this group would be a member who could relate to whatever I was experiencing. Never be too shy to come and share, we are all behind you and we all want your quit to work.

I just wanted to welcome you as well as say that I am also a new quitter! Today is my 2 week mark and it is getting easier as time goes  - the first 5 days were so hard but I just resigned to the fact that I will be in some discomfort, pain, agitation and allow myself to be in it. I reward myself with little things everyday and remind myself that I am saving my life one breath at a time. YOU CAN DO IT!!! Let's stick together in this..

I haven't tried it. But some say it works. Welcome to SSC and we are here for you. Keep your ice water on hand.

Thanks for the advice.  I am going to quit cold turkey and if it gets too hard I will try hypnosis to make it easier.

Welcome to the group TMitchell!

Have you started to work your way through the program?  Be sure to put a rewards system in place.  Congrats on starting your quit!

The following information was taken from our program:
Hypnosis therapy is designed to help you focus on your nicotine consumption patterns and to change your attitudes about smoking or chewing in ways that will help you quit. Hypnosis often involves 1 to 4 hour sessions and may include the development of a personal program tape to use at home after or in between sessions.

How does it work? While you are hypnotized, the therapist gives you suggestions to help you stop your nicotine use. The procedure may help with relaxation and withdrawal symptoms.

What else should I know? Your chances of quitting after just one hypnosis session are low, but may improve with multiple sessions. However, there is little evidence that the hypnotic state helps people quit above and beyond the suggestions provided by the therapist. In addition, hypnosis can be both expensive and time consuming. If you choose this method, be sure to check the costs, time commitment and your therapist's qualifications.

Members, what are your experiences with hypnosis?

Hello all,

I'm a new non-smoker.  My quit day was supposed to be tommorow and I have 2 more in the pack.  I haven't had one all day just to see how long I could go.  I'm just getting back from lunch and I'm smoke free.  Now I'm thinking I'll just trash those 2 in the pack and start living smoke free today.  Anywya, this is a great site.  I wish all of you much success and many blessings.

Also, I know this will probably be the hardest thing I have ever done.  I was doing so me research though, and found something on hypnosis.  Has anyone tried this to stop smoking??
