MammaD, I'm on day 57 and my cravings are starting to intensify for some reason. Coming here and posting will help you, reading everyones advice will help you, but you have to realize that taking your life back from such a destructive and addictive drug isn't an easy thing. I like to think of week three as when the real mental war begins. Yes there are still cravings that you feel physically, but the nicotine is out of your body. Now your fighting that junkie in your head. The one that whispers in your ear when no one else is home, when your driving by the drive thru, when your done with a meal. The junkie, nicodemon, nicojerk, whatever you wish to call it, isn't going to let you go easily. You need to have the resolve to believe that this is your LAST QUIT. Be strong, post often, we're all here for you.

Hi Mamma D,

That's very common. Think of it like this.

When you begin your quit you are faced with a little uncertainty, a little fear, and a lot of adrenaline. You start day 1 fighting, clawing, working against all obstacles. Then week one is over and you are pumped. I did it!!! I fought my way through week one. Now on to week two. Fight, claw, Yippeeee!!! I made it through week two. Now what happens???

At this stage most people are exhausted. They are tired of fighting and clawing and wonder when the he!! this fight going to be over?? The good news is that the unless you are on a patch or using gum the nicotine is out of your system. Now your war is a mental war. The nicodemon is walking through the desert. He hasn't had his N water for two weeks and he's ready to drop. But he's not going without a fight. He's gonna whisper in your ear "Just one." "Your car broke down why don't have a pack now and we'll start this fight again next month" "You got into a fight with your friend/family member this will help with that." These whisperings are what you can expect next. You will deal with them from time to time. Right now it will be fairly consistantly. In a month or so they will begin to fade and in 6 months or so maybe less the whisperings will be once in a blue moon.

You may think "Wow, that's a lot of time." Yeah, that's true but the hardest part is almost over. From experience I can tell you when you get to that place where the whispers are semi monthly you'll realise how silly we were to think that cigarettes were so important to us. Keep up the fight Mamma. You're doing great.

I wish I could tell you that this is a nice, smooth, even walk up to the pinnacle of being smoke-free forever. It aint! I'm sorry MammaD.......it just aint.

We are addicts and we'll have to fight that for a long, long time. We have been addicted to the most powerfully addictive drug there is. Think about how HARD we worked to get there......sneaking smokes young, coughing and hacking till we could inhale, getting physically sick, spending our lunch money on smokes, emulating our "heroes" that smoked, all that stuff. I guess we'll just have to work HARD to get OUT of there too.

Our will and desire to NOT be addicts anymore is what gets us through each crave, each rough spot, each day.

And IT DOES get easier.

.....Honest it does.

If you read mike/astrofan's post the other day......you'll see that we will face temptation for a lot of days, weeks, months......even years. That stresses just how important it is to never stop saying N.O.P.E.

Each one of those will make our resolve stronger and keep us Quit. Each time our nicojerk raises it's head, we'll beat it back down. It just won't give up trying completely for a long, long time.

It gets easier MammaD.......I promise.......

I have had days, since about 75 or so, where I didn't think about smoking at all. We've all been there and we all understand. Post and tell it like it is. You'll feel a lot better. You'll know the family heard and is there to help.

I recommend a nice bubble bath, or a nice hot shower using some nice scented soap. Treat yourself like royalty as you body needs to know that it can experience joy without the rush of the toxins from nicotine. And if it isn't raining where you are, taking a nice long walk tomorrow! Everything is so green this time of year, the flowers are blooming, and the smells are incredible! I haven't smelled spring in 20 years! Trust me, give it a try, your nose will love you! We're all here to help you get through bleh week, one month smoke free is on the horizen! Keep taking it one day at a time and you'll go far!

Mamma D... as Sparky would say, the 3rd week is bleh week. Tough to get through after the high of conquering heck week. You are almost through it though, and week 4 will be easier. Keep strong!

Sorry to hear that this week has been difficult for you. However, you have done the right thing by posting here instead of reaching for a cigarette. That is great news!

Take some time for yourself tonight. Perhaps a hot bath or a nice cup of tea would be relaxing. What other activities do you usually do when you feel stressed? Is there someone you usually talk to? Is there anything else you can do that would help you feel less stressed?

Don't forget Mamma D, this week is almost over! Soon a new week will start and you will be one more week smoke-free! Start planning out those rewards now, you can do this Mamma D!

Members, any other advice for Mamma D on how to de-stress this week? What activities or strategies do you use to help you relax?
