That is SO great!!! :)  I think that's a perfect amount of time to prepare!  I'm going to post what I posted on the other site for you, so it's here too.  I REALLY hope you do some of these things, but they are just suggestions (well, except for #2... that one's pretty critical to quitting! LOL!)

Feel free to PM me ANYTIME you need some extra support! I will TOTALLY be there to help you!

My suggestions based on my experience:

#1 - REWARDS
Start setting up a reward system for you right now before you have quit. Make one for 1 day, 3 days, 1 week, etc... Rewards give you something to look forward to. Think of it this way... you spend A LOT of money on cigarettes... take some of that money and put it aside for you to just get yourself something just for you! Plan them out, and that makes it a fun thing to look forward to! If you don't set up rewards, after a week or two, you'll start thinking "I DESERVE a cigarette! I've EARNED it!" And you'll be more likely to make a cigarette your reward and that is something you can NOT do!!!

#2 - Just 1 = Just 1,000,000
I'm about to say the most obvious statement ever, and yet one that people who first quit smoking (including myself when I first quit) just do NOT get. Most obvious statement ever: If you quit smoking, you cannot smoke. DUH!!!  Not "just one" when you're out with friends, not "just one" when you REALLY need one, not "just one" when you've had a really bad day. NONE! Oh sure, you might just have one THAT day... but what about the next time you want to smoke? Will it be "just one" and then "just one more?" and then the next time, "just one pack." The "just one" lie is just that... it's a lie.

#3 - Substitutes
Come up with some things you will do throughout the day instead of smoking... you can cut a straw to the length of a cigarette and bite one end to crimp it, and it 'feels" kinda llke a cigarette. You can use sunflower seeds, chew ice, chew gum (either nicotine gum or regular gum), suck on mints, get some silly putty and play with it with your hands, or do what I did... twizzler pull and peel licorice. I would bite them down to the size of a cigarette and then "smoke" it like a cigarette... and, they taste a HECK of a lot better!

As I said before, feel free to PM me anytime you have a question! I've been there and I know what you're going through! Best wishes! I think you're going to do GREAT!!!

Good luck Gail!!! :)

Congrats on picking a quit day!  The thing to do now is cut down if you can, the less you smoke the better.  The big thing is build that confidence for the quit.  That will help you through.  When the day comes, hang on to the non-negotiable word, NOPE (Not one puff ever).  Let us know when you are ready to go, and we will help you along.  You may be young, but you can do this, and set a great example for your brother!

Yes I am! And thank you so much.

I thought about it for a while after I signed off earlier and I picked a quit date!  The 29th of this month.  I'm excited to be a part of this group and sooooo scared of failing...again.  But I know this is something I have to do for myself and my family.

Thank you to everyone for all your kind words and support!!!

Welcome!!!!!

Gail, I think you are the person I recommended today, right?  I'm SO glad that you decided to come and join, and even more excited that you're making an AWESOME commitment to yourself and your life!  Keep your brother as your motivation... mine was my niece when I quit... I didn't want her to take after me... and after she saw me quit, thankfully, she does not smoke (she's now 20, but she was 16 when I first quit).  I think that you're going to do AWESOME!!!  You've got some great support on the other site, and you're gonna have some AWESOME support here from these great people who have been through what you're going to go through!  You know how to reach me anytime you have a question or need some support.  I don't get here much, but I'll try to check in and see how you're doing from time to time.  And I'm telling you, the people here are SO supportive and will always be here for you anytime you need a hand!  Just don't give up!  You're doing a GREAT thing for yourself!!! :)  Congrats on your new decision!!!

Gail, welcome to the SSC!  Sparky gave you some great advice.  This quit is all about YOU!!!  Preparation is key to a successful quit, so read, read, and read some more!  Go through "my program" so you have a plan in place.  Are you going to quit cold turkey or use a NRT?  Use the search feature to read different people's experiences.  When you pick your quit date, add it, along with your stats, to your postings from "my profile" so you can track your progress.  Post as often as you need!  We're all here for you!  P.S.  tell your younger brother to check out this site.  He's way too young to start this addiction!

Welcome to the group. You've made the 1st step.  I have also tried to quit before and started again.  Like you said that first cigarette after stopping always tasted bad and made me dizzy but then I  would start again.  Now when I want one I try and focus on how bad that first one after a quit made me feel.

My Quit Date: 3/26/2009
Smoke-Free Days: 14
Cigarettes Not Smoked: 140
Amount Saved: $52.50
