Welcome aboard joyce

I was a close to 2 pack a day smoker for about 50 years.  This place and the people here have got me to 60some days free of it.  It's not the easiest thing I did, specially in the beginning.......I went CT.........but it is getting easier as time goes on.
You have lots of reasons to Quit as you said.  The MOST important one you mentioned was "I'm scared, happy, resolved, afraid of failure, but I want to quit so badly"
Really wanting it is crucial and it sounds to me like you do.........

Post, Read, Post, Read, Post, Read......you get the idea.......it truly helps.  When the crave hits.........POST and wait for 5 replies......it will get you through it.  Yell, Rant.......whatever it takes.........we all did it.
You can do this!!!!
Keep the QUIT..............

huggggggg

Great post, Joyce.  You are setting out on a unique and wonderful journey.  It will have potholes along the way...perhaps a smashed bug on the windshiedl and possibly a flat tire.  But the view of the smoke-free skyline and the smell of lungs filled with clean ocean/mountain air are so worth the trip.

Log in often.  Read, read, read.  Then post, scream, cry, laugh and share in yours and our experiences.  Chances are someone has 'been there-done that-bought the tshirt' and provide feedback to support.

Keep the Quit and Enjoy the Trip!

Joyce, welcome to the SSC!  HP gave you some great advice about using the patch.  Preparation is key to a successful quit, so going through "my program" is a great way to be prepared.  Set up a reward system to celebrate each passed cravings, each smoke free day, and each smoke free week.  It looks like you have alot of activities planned to keep you busy, and you have a network of non-smoking friends too.  I like when you said this quit is about you.  ITS ALL ABOUT YOU!!!  Treat yourself like royalty!  And just take this one day at a time, and you'll go far!  We're all rooting for your success!

Howdy!

Henny Penny has some great advice!  I am almost through day 3 so so far so good. I started to hate the taste of cigs before I even quit and that has helped me a lot.   I did stop cold turkey, but there are some here who used the patches and are doing great!  I just found keeping myself busy has helped me A LOT!!  There will be more coming along with some great advice to help you!  If you ever feel the urdge to smoke I am on here all day while I am at work M-F 8-5 CST (see what I get to do at work, NOTHING!)

The Best of Wishes to you!  You can make it past this nasty habit no matter how long the habit as been around!

Hi Joyce!
We are all so happy you decided to join us. Thank you for the great greeting!
You will love it here!  No other place like it on the web. It's a small group that is really more like a family with everyone caring for each other.  There is genuine understanding from all smokers who have lived it.

Your story is similar to mine in some respects.. I had been smoking for 33 years, a pack a day.  Many quits over all those years and failed. Then one day last year I just threw out the cigs.  Put on a patch and followed the program.Have to laugh now but when I worked the program questionaire, I was a 9 out of 10 serious/addicted smoker... it said most women come in at a 3. So I was a smoker's smoker!  It wasn't a picnic but it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be!  I wouldn't want to do again though   Would never have kept the quit without this fine group of quitters.  Everyone here will be on your side... you just inherited a whole cheering section!!!

Others will be along soon to say hi and give pointers.
My favorite tip was to keep a positive mental attitude!!!!! PMA !!!!
Many here have read the Allen Carr book which is a great attitude adjuster.
If you don't have the book yet, start reading all you can here in the old posts and forums. There is soooooooo much good info there. I was glued to this site reading and reading in the beginning. It's a great resource.
*** Be sure to work through the "my program" at the top of this page. It will provide many tools and insights! Plus you will get your counter!*****
That counter is an amazing little motivater!
Oh!! And don't forget REWARDS! Your brain will be missing the cigarette "rewards" which can be overcome by providing your brain with other rewards... for every hour, day, crave you made it through successfully!

Sounds like your new little "distraction" will be a great motivator and new friend!

Keep posting! It really helps!
And welcome !!!!

Best,
HP

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

Hi everyone ... my quit day in tomorrow April 4, 2009. I am using the patch as I have been a chain smoker for almost 40 years. I'm scared, happy, resolved, afraid of failure, but I want to quit so badly. I know me and I know I can't do it alone or rely on my considerable willpower. I am a very creative person, writing ( published ), I've taken up drawing, learning to play the keyboard, and painting with coloured pencils. Here in California, cigarettes have gone up almost $10 a carton! And since I smoke 7 cartons a month, I am sickened and determined not to give the big companies not one more penny. I also want to see my grandgirl grow up! I have mild COPD - is that like being a little bit pregnant, smile? I am on disability for spinal stenosis and spinal degeneration so my funds are limited. I went out today and bought 4 weeks of patches, paid all my bills, and household things I need for the month. So, I have left myself no money for cigarettes! My bestest friend quit a few years ago so I can stick tight to her. Also, I know several other close friends to talk to. I'm really trying to follow all the suggestions on the test thingies and I will need you. Before when I've tried to quit it's usually because I was in a relationship with a non smoking guy, smile again. This time though it's for me. All the usual reasons, but for me. I am worth it and I can do it, I know, with all the help that's out there and here. Tomorrow I get my new little Yorkie and she has a liver condition - not bad, but man second hand smoke just can't help her. She's a rescue, 4 pounds and I love her already. I had a Yorkie for 18 years and he died in my arms. So that is so exciting to get a new little Princess! Okay, I'm rambling now - I am 55 so I do that sometimes. But I will be here every single day, maybe several times a day . Thanks for being here, caring, and listening.
Blessings,
Joyce
