Tracy, welcome to the SSC!  You've been given some awesome advice!  I also went cold turkey but in my case it was after a long talk with my oncologist.  I went through "my program" so I was 110% prepared for this.  I swear I read EVERY post on this site.  I posted as often as I needed, and through dedication and all of the support here, I just reached my 7 month smoke free milestone last week.  I couldn't have done it without the SSC!  Take it one day at a time, put up a good fight, and remember this quit is all about you!  Congratulations on 4 days smoke free!  We're all rooting for your continued success!

Wow great story! Love how you keep pushing on - what an inspiration. Here I am struggling with my nicotine addiction alone(as we all know its not that easy either) and here you are a single mother of 4 kids, no family, made it through a VERY serious drug addiction, a heart surgery at a real young age, and who knows what else in between.  Not to make your life seem so dramtic (for a lack of better word) and mine so "normalish" (again for a lack of better word)....  but you must be very very proud of yourself, - and to have none of your children pick up on your bad habit is amazing. I started smoking simply because I knew no better and both parents smoked in the house. Congrats on 4 days of being smoke free. Everyone is different on this site, as you will get to see, myself - I was fine for the first 2 weeks... my motivation was high, I had kept myself really busy, Stopped hanging out with friends who smoked, stopped drinking, stopped walking on the side of the street where I would buy my cigarettes. But after a while, I realized I couldnt stop hanging out with my best friend who smokes just because I couldnt control my own LIFE.... so once I started to hang out with her... thats when it got tough - still smoke free though!! By now most of the nicotine is out of your system but not out of your mind. Stay strong and keep your head up and take one step at a time. If it is boredom that is a big trigger for you, you should try and schedule your days so that your hardly ever idle. I am sure with kids you can find many things to do, create game nights, clean your house, excersize, get a new book, spring is around the corner, how about gardening? Pick up a new hobbie or familiarize yourself with an old one. Keep Busy and remember this quit is for YOU! I am sure your wonderful children will be really proud as well. Let us know how it goes!

Hello gaugesmom and welcome to SSC. Four days is excellent, and it tough to do CT but if you really can't get any NRT help then you need to come here often and get support. Many of us here found the group support was really instrumental in making the quit work, if you need to come here and holler and vent to get you through a crave then come and do it no one will mind, and everyone will reach out to you.
I think with your heart problems you really have no choice but to make this quit work. You are doing a grand job with your kids and working and conquering the crystal meth too, so you certainly have strength, it just needs to be focused now on the nicotine.
Make sure you have plenty of distractions in place for when a weak moment springs up on you, drink plenty of iced water, chew gum, have nibbles, whatever takes your mind off the smokes- and the craves will pass.
I can honestly say it does get easier, yes its slow but the days will soon pile up behind you and you will be feeling sooo much better in every way.
Good luck, gaugesmom!

gaugesmom,

Welcome to the SSC and congratulations on deciding to kick the habit!
We strongly encourage you to prepare for your quit using the program. Quitting smoking is not only a habit, it's an addiction. This program is going to help you plan how to deal with cravings and more importantly teach you how to replace this old habit with a new one. You'll also need to put into place a reward system. It should have three components: small one for after each craving, medium for the end of each smoke-free day and a bigger one for the end of each smoke-free week.

Start reading through the forums, you'll quickly realize that many have felt just as you do now and they are now non-smokers. You'll also be able to find a lot of tips and tricks to help you along the way.

It sounds like you've been through a lot Tracy, but it also sounds like you are ready, motivated, and determined to remain smoke free!
Good luck & check back soon!

hello everyone, my name is tracy and i am a nicoine addict. i have smoked for more than 18 years a pack a day and i am disgusted with it. i have a bad heart and have had to have a tripple bypass at the ripe old age of 42 many heart troubles but i love to smoke. i have been quit for about 4 days now cold turkey and i am just holding on. my job is not a stressful one i am a server at a restaurant here at the grand canyon and i have 4 children 21,19 13 7 all living here at home none of them smoke. i have ben trying to quit for about a year i just lost a 30 day quit and a 63 day quit before that due to treggers and thinking i could have just one yeah right i got kicked off of why quit because of relapse and so here i am hoping for a little support none out here in the 3d world single parent and no family except kids and they dont really get it. i used to have an addiction to crystal meth about 8 years ago and believe me that was easier to quit than smoking. my beggest trigger is boredom or when i get to work and everyone goes outside to smoke at break i am fine at home sure i get craves but i can get passed them at home. but at work its is so hard. so today is my 4th day and i wish to continue. i have tried all the other nrts and i just cant hack it with a bad heart so ct is the only way for me. thats my story and i hope i can hang on here for a while and get this party started thanks for the invite and i will be strong.
