I continued to put off quitting because I had self-talked myself into thinking it would never happen.
That's all or nothing thinking. Stinkin' thinkin'.
You can do it. One thing I'm going to do differently this time is to know that if I do relapse, it doesn't mean I have to throw in the towel on the whole thing. I can choose to brush myself off, brush my teeth, and get back on the band wagon. Having a [relapse] smoke isn't necessarily the same as failure unless I continue to lie down, give up, and justify my failure with self-pity and say to myself "that's it, i'm done quitting".
I'm new to this quit, so maybe i'm not making any sense, and I hope i haven't offended you.
All i know is tonight i would've grabbed a smoke from my wife but i came here instead. Doesn't mean I won't relapse/fail, but i'm' going to bed now and if I fail it will have to be tomorrow and that's day 4 and i'll worry about that tomorrow.
We all have different times to be ready, but think about this: what is intrinsic to smoking that is so appealing? Really it is a wolf in sheep's clothing. It is addiction, meaning we are not in control of our minds or bodies, and it isn't normal for our bodies and minds to be polluted like this. The thought that smoking gives me something is nothing but the addiction talking.
Hang in there. Keep visiting us. Keep your butts in a jar and smell them periodically. That's what we smell like to non-smokers. Wishing you well.

I'm not much of a poster here. I can't add much to  everyone else's great advise. However, speaking from my own experience it was always not the right time to quit for some reason. As someone pointed out, the longer you smoke the more addicted you become and the harder it becomes. I quit  my senior week in high school. If only I toughed it out then! This year I will attend my 40th  high school reunion and look forward to sitting with all the non-smokers this time! If I can do this, you can too!

Hi Happy!  So glad you came by to post. You are doing the right things so far.  Work the program.  Post here to talk about it.  You will get a lot from reading all the posts of the past successful quitters.  You can do anything you set your mind to.  Please don't take offense (you or the powers that be) when I say that I don't like the whole "not ready to quit" language.  I think deep down we are all ready or we wouldn't be here checking things out.  Hopefully by continuing to do this research and reading you will decide that you can do it.  That you are worth it.  Don't let fear hold you back!

Welcome.  I really feel your pain.  You are on the road to quit.  The bug is whispering in your ear and you are listening.  Fear has kept many of us from quitting and fear has allowed some of us to smoke again.  I can't tell when it will be right for you, but if you don't try you never will know.  If this is your first quit please get prepared and read as much as you can here.  I will tell you this the first time I quit almost through the day a crave hit me so darn hard I almost had a car wreck.  I did not know it would be like that.  I was on Zyban at the time and thought all I to do was not smoke.  OMG, no one told me about the withdrawals, the craves, and being spacey.  But that is all part of it, but it doesn't last long.  It is so worth it and so are you.  You will smell soooooo good, and will have extra energy and time.  Just do it and let us help you.

I dunno, but sounds to me like you want to quit.  Perhaps, like Breather suggested, you should read Allen Carr's book, do some more research on the negative long term effects of smoking and perhaps talk with your Doctor.  Love to have you join us on this journey!

actually from what you wrote it's obvious to me that your reasons to quit are  more important to you , it's just that it's very hard to do. and it's so very very very easy to put off quitting.
the problem with that though is it gets harder as we get more addicted both physically and mentally.
that's the bad news , here's the good news , you can quit , we all have . was it easy ? no , but with the help you'll recieve here it might be a little easier than you think.
please , plan a quit date and jump in the water , it's so much fun as your quit grows in days daily.
and we're all here cheering for you  ,let's go get that first day ! what do ya think ?

Hello happy2Beme Before you decide whether to quit smoking or not there's a book by Allen Carr called  " the easy way to quit smoking ". Most people here have read it and I found it to be a great help. You're not supposed to stop smoking until you've finished the book. I quit smoking last Remembrance Day. My fingers and teeth aren't stained anymore and I don't smell like cigarettes. When you decide we'll be here for you. breather 72 Addict 0

There is no doubt that quitting smoking can be scary.  As Rock was saying, it can be very difficult to imagine living your day to day life without cigarettes.  Sometimes you just have to take that leap.  Just make sure you keep going through the program and when you're ready, we're all here for you because we all know what its like to be where you are right now.  You'll find a lot of great advice here from some great people.
