Congrat kitty on 30days!  I have always worried about smoking ruining my perfect teeth (no cavities, just on rebuild from a break in grade school)  I don't like the yellowing its caused, but gosh I had no idea I could lose all my teeth and jaw bone from smoking!  I mean I knew it wasn't good for them, but I had no idea it could really cause that much damage! YIKES!  I don't want to smoke after hearing that story.

I am so sorry about your teeth, but yes as others said with todays health tech you can have a beautiful smile soon!  And you'll have something to smile about...Your smoke-free!  Congrats again!

Welcome Kitty and I am so sorry to hear about your dental experiences. I too had advanced gum disease and have three 'mobile' teeth at the moment so the dentist tells me. I have had deep cleaning under anasaethetic to try and save the rest and so far so good, although the loose ones will have to be extracted soon before they drop out themselves!
I really did not know that gum disease was a consequence of smoking- I know that sounds ignorant but I didnt. I too have massive bone loss and this is all caused by the blood supply to the gums being depleted because of poor circulation due to the smoking.
I am not carrying out a vigorous daily deep cleaning ritual to try and save the others but I fear it may be too late- oh my, if only we had known then what we know now.
Anyway, the good news is my dentist says my teeth have improved immensely and of course she is thrilled I no longer smoke (almost 9 months now) so Kitty keep on going with your quit, although alot of our damage is already done we can prevent further damage right now- Good Luck Kitty and let us know how you are getting on.

Kitty Good for you not smoking for 30 days. Awesome. Show that nico-demon who's boss . Everyone has their own reasons for not smoking. I want to always remember the reasons for quitting in the first place to keep the quit close. Bad time of year to have that happen but I'm glad you're doing better now. Don't leave before the miracle happens. breather 71 Addict 0

Sorry I missed this earlier, Kitty!

Welcome to our fabulous stop smoking support group. With your determination and the support you'll find here--you are destined for success..
As you'll see there are many 30 a day + 20 years smokers here who have been quit with some very impressive statistics.

The one day at a time; or one minute (whatever you need ) attitude is what helped me at the hardest of times. Drink lots of cold water, breath deeply & read and post and read some more. Be good to yourself.

Quitting is SO worth it. And--I promise it does get easier with time....

It is right up there with the BEST decision I have made...the freedom, the not stinking, the 'not being one of them', being able to breathe, being a good example to my kids and family & patients & friends, being out of the chains of addiction...the list goes on & on..

Stay close & best wishes for  a speedy recovery with your teeth.

Deb

WOW !  Thank you all so very much for your amazing welcoming posts
I wanted to add a little bit more about myself and what really made quitting not an option for me anymore.

In November I was was diagnosed with advanced gum disease.. in my case it was considered "hopeless"
when it came to reversing it, surgery etc. etc.  I was floored and needless to say in a state of complete
shock.  The bottom line was that I will eventually have to have all of my teeth extracted --- and why ???
BECAUSE OF SMOKING !  The main culprit was 25 cig's a day for 35 yrs. and this is the end result.

I was feeling sad, mad, angry and cried for a week but I had no one to blame but myself.

On December 22nd (the day I quit) I had 8 teeth removed (front 4 upper and front 4 lower - these
were the worst ones) and then I had temporary partials put in to see what the impact would be on my
other teeth.

So folks that's my story thus far... I'm doing well.  I have healed beautifully.  I had one bad infection
near a molar 2 weeks ago which was the size of a prune...eeeek, but with antibiotics that is all gone !
Now it's all a wait and see with the insurance company to find out how much they will cover for a full
upper place (YEP losing the rest of my teeth) and then a partial for the lower because the gum disease
has completely disinegrated my bone density and the full plate would simply have nothing to hold on to
so they want to keep some of my back lower teeth for the partial.

I'm positive.. happy.. and feeling so much better now than I had been feeling since that dreadful
November day when I heard that horrid news.

Stay strong, stay quit and thanks for 'listening' !
they immediately put in
