Why is this so scary?

15 years ago 0 1356 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
hey Sue, it is scary because it is your crutch, your go to behavior if you are upset, angry, tired, ...whatever- that is what you do.

This to me was the most important thing, you need to develop new behaviors to do  instead of smoking.  Some I used and still do is walking, round and round my building at work, my neighborhood at home, drinking cold water, eating healthy snacks, and recently playing with Facebook.  Anything but smoke.  Protect your quit at all costs.  Your life is at stake.

Something to distract you might be to join a gym or new menu plan at home, try new recipes, etc....a whole new lifestyle.  Brush your teeth after you eat instead of smoking.  All these things really work.  I still have listerine at work for after lunch.  Plan for this quit, arm yourself, and read read read here - it helps, and  that is the major reason why my quit was successful, the people here and this website.  Use it AND if you get in to trouble - post here - HELP and wait for 10 replies before you act.  This quit is yours - take care of it.

Sue

Welcome Sue!  To answer your question, it's scary because it's EVIL.  It's like a horror movie, like a Stephen King book, it's eating you alive and it's time to kick it's ash!  I see you're in Canada...nuff said.  So I wish you strong wind that blows out your matches, and numbs your fingers enough to make you unable to hold a cig in your hand.  Maybe that awful 'oh-hell-it-got-stuck-to-my-lip-again' -itis thrown in for good measure.

I mean this from my heart and wish you godspeed.  Go on get quittin!

Hi Sue and welcome- so glad you've joined us. I quit too at the same time as my hubby and we also used the patches. I hear you on the scary bit, because I think thats one of the reasons I wanted to make this quit stick-I didnt want to have to keep going back to the start. So you sound as though you have already started cutting back and preparing, so all I can do is wish you luck and look forward to hearing how its going.

Hey Sue!!!

Welcome!!!   Use your time well to read and learn from all of your new quit buddies here!  Preparation is really the key to a successful quit!!!  Keep telling yourself over and over that you CAN quit and really build up a Positive Mental Attitude going  into this!!!  Turn your fear into determination and sort of psyche yourself up during this time leading up to your quit day!!!   I thought of this as a war against the nico-demon that I was NOT willing to lose!!!  There were several battles, but I was determined not to lose even one of them!!

Read and learn and prepare yourself well!!!

Sue, as you can see, we're all so happy that you found this site!  And we're all here to make sure this isn't as scary as it seems.  We have all experienced the stress, the scariness, the sense of loss, etc. that goes along with quitting smoking.  We help each celebrate the good and survive the not so good!  Set up your quit meter under "my profile", fill out all of the questions under "my program", put together a reward system, and be 100% prepared for next Monday's official quit date!  We're all rooting for your success!  And your partner's success too!
