Why is this so scary?

Hilarious Sue!  I often wonder the same thing, how in creation did I get things done when I was smoking.  Then I remember that I neglected a lot!!!  Now I'm actually doing more fun things as well as being more productive!

You'll do great!  Sounds like you're preparing yourself well.

Sue, well done on getting through the day- yes you say you had a thought about smoking, but thats all it was a thought- and you dealt with it. I was glued to this site for my first couple of weeks, although I didnt have physical cravings I didnt know how to manage my extra time and so I came on here and read and posted. Its a wonderful distraction and very insiprational.
Keep up the good work Sue, and before you know it those days will be clocking up behind you.

Thanks everyone ;)

So today is the day ... I got up at 3 am and put my patch on.  Not doing too bad today, however I'm used to not smoking at work, however I did not have one first thing this morning or in the car on the way to work.

I did have a little bit of a panic attack ... my patch just about fell off LOL ... need to stay away from body lotion for the next little while and (note to self) ... ALWAYS carry an extra patch LOL

I did have a thought about having a smoke and so decided to come and read and post in the forum :)

The bigger challenge will be at home ... plan ... do some cooking, make some jewellery, do some reading of Allen Carr's book, play Rock Band (that's a good one),  I have another game that I just rented that I could spend some time with ... an excercise machine that is calling my name ... and if things get REALLY bad, crawl into bed ... WOW how did I ever find the time to smoke before LOL

Have a great day everybody :)
Sue

Hello Sue The things that are the scariest are the things unknown , the things that haven't happened yet , the what if's. You've had 2 awesome quits in your past that have led you to where you are now. Realise that this is a process and your past two quits figure into the equation. It's understandable to be apprehensive but think of it as going swimming. When you first dive in it's freezing but it doesn't take long to become aclimatised to the water and within a short while it isn't half bad. Eventually it's refreshing and enjoyable. Avoid a situation in the short term that might be a trigger until you're more sure of yourself. People , places , and things. If you're afraid of being in a situation in the short term then don't do it. Attempt that situation when you're stronger and more sure of yourself. Always leave yourself an out and if you have to just leave. Never allow yourself to become complacent and lose track of the reasons you decided to quit in the first place. Those reasons will be just as valid a year from now as they were day one. Fear is a lack of faith. There is no good reason why you can't succeed. Others have done this and so can you. The water's great , jump in !!!!! breather 59 Addict still 0

Hi Sue,
I did that a couple of times just to get through a situation. Then when I took the patch off to smoke, I would get a headache and palpitations. Too much nicotine because the patch nicotine was still being delivered as I was puffing away.  It's easy to be getting too much nicotine with that approach so be cautious. :)

Are you asking about whether to use the patch to quit? It's a personal decision because you know yourself best. I knew from previous quits that I could not go cold turkey.   By the time the patch therapy was over, I was  happy to be done with them! But they did make it a fairly easy quit and  happy to finally be rid of the smokes.  You are ahead in a way as you have learned to navigate your work days without cigarettes!  Not bad, that's half the battle!

Oh, and FYI - I was so scared to quit that I gave myself the name Henny Penny because I was a chicken!  I really thought the sky would fall down and the world would end if I quit. Surprise, I didn't. lol.  Actually, life turned out much better without the smokes! Yours will too!

Good luck, come back often to post, we all want you to have success with your quit!

Best,
HP

Hi Everyone and thank you :)

Everyone's so positive, I love coming here to read the posts!

Todash, that was hilarious LOL ... I love it!!
SueinNC ... you are so right ... it's scary because it's a crutch ... I want to throw away the crutches :)

I've changed my quit day by one day, to next Tuesday instead of Monday.  I've decided to take the day off with my partner on Monday to surprise her and so Tuesday it is.

I couldn't find my copy at home of Allen Carr's so I went out and bought another one.  I might spead a lot of Monday reading ... that book is sooo motivating.  When I've quit before I really just wanted to sleep through the cravings, so I have already given my boss a heads up that I might not be in LOL

I'm using the patch at work right now and plan on continuing using the patch full time.  Part of me wants to just do it, not use the patch and get it over with, at some point I'm going to have to go through the physical withdrawl.

Part of my problem I think is I have gotten into the habit of using the patch for work then taking it off for evenings and weekends and it's easy to go from non-smoker by day to smoker by night.

I'm just so torn ... what are some thoughts out there??

Sue

Hi Sue,
Welcome to SSC!  I understand your feelings about it being scary...even daunting!!!!  But you know what, I think when we look at the big picture it seems worse than it actually is.
Small baby steps makes it easier.  Firstly, plan your quit with your stop smoking aids(i.e. patch, inhalers, Zyban...), then plan your coping tools and your distractions.
For the first while, think no further ahead than the here and now.  Don't dwell upon tomorrow, that will take care of itself.
Drink water, walk, nap when possible, forgo housework...do what it takes to stay smoke free.  Good tv shows worked for me.  Go to bed early!
And don't forget to post.  That really helps.  And pretty soon the hours become days, days become weeks, etc....
Congratulations on making a wonderful decision!

Cheers,
Jan
