Am I Wrong?

15 years ago 0 1107 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Thanks for all the advice, I have a trustees meeting on Monday. I'll make a couple of break suggestions. Thankfully, none of the trustees are smokers...Go figure! I am going to stick to the fact I don't want to be around the smoke. One other thing I'm grateful for...My plane was delayed 31/2 hours.. a two hour flight..I didn't have to run around the airport to find a place to smoke..small favors..Right?

Wow Goofy, I can't even find a public or a meeting place where you'd even be allowed to smoke in Ontario!
I believe you have every right to do what you did.  Its a right to breathe in clean air.  Second hand smoke, after all, is a killer.
Stick by your decision.

Hi Goofy,
Geez, where is this place that you can still smoke indoors?? I would have loved to have been there back when I was a smoker!
Maybe your smoker friends feel the same that it's a smoking haven of sorts but really..... that is a lot of smoke in a small space. No, I don't think you are being too sensitive. I think that we smokers do have lungs that are recuperating and should be protected. All that new pink lung tissue you are growing is probably very sensitive. Just my thought.
If if comes down to it and it was me, I'd be protecting my quit and my health.
Tell them nicely that you just can't take it. If they don't want to help one of their fraternal brothers then maybe time to reconsider the fraternity.

Everybody gave some good advice. I hope you work it all out with your fellow members.

Best,
HP

GOOFY,

When I used to smoke, I felt that anybody who objected to the smell or the possible health side-effects were just being over-sensitive.
Now I know that part of the person who is an addict is in denial about their addiction and its effect on others. Yes, it smells horrible and yes, secondary smoking is unhealthy, if not actually dangerous.
The only way sensitivity comes into this argument is how you'll need to use tact in explaining to these people why it is not acceptable to smoke when meeting as a group.

all the best

Excellent points---I agree with all of you.  I, too, am amazed that it is even allowed anymore!  Of course, I am assuming it is a fraternity group left over from your college days.  I suppose smoking is a step-up from their behaviors back then  I dunno, but one of the members of your group, Goofy, is trying to sell the SSC a photo of you from those days...something about a trash can of hooch and a pic of you with unmentionables on your head and a doobie.........

In any event---follow Q's advice.  He seems to be right on target!

Absolutely!  I still have many friends that smoke and I go with them sometimes just to catch up on what's going on in the smoke group world.  Smokers are going to smoke and getting in their face about it can often result in losing friends; however, smokers are free to smoke UNTIL that freedom conflicts with the freedom of another person which is why smoking has been banned in most buildings and also wearing perfum, etc.  Also you would hardly be getting in their face but simply asking a question.  While I do hang around my smoker friends, I have distanced myself from going to a smokers home if they smoke inside because it's harder on my lungs now and if I do go their it's usually a short visit.  I guess what I'm saying is the choice is yours.  You may choose to tell them your concerns and ask for suggestions because after all there's no harm in asking and if they say your out of line or there's no way it will stop your left with two choices.  A - You can sit through it and be uncomfortable or B - You can tell them that it's too hard on your lungs since you've quit smoking and you can't attend anymore.

Goofy,

I am amazed that it is even allowed anymore.  I can't think of one single building that people can smoke in anymore, it was always made difficult for me to find a place to smoke.  Like Pen said, if it is allowed, they  are not doing anything wrong, however, it is rude.  I don't know how many meetings I hated going to because I never knew when I would get a smoke break.  Outside smoke breaks would be the best, you must still be able to sympathize with those that are chained to their addiction, but they too should have mutual respect for those never smokers and recovering ex smokers.  Good luck Goofy with whatever happens.

I agree.  I can mingle with my smoking friends outside as long as I can get some air and I not inhaling it much.  In a closed room my lungs and throat are just way to senitive for that kind of abuse anymore.  I guess lungs and throat have had all they could deal with.

Hi Goofy,
I don't think you're being too sensitive at all.  We know the dangers of second hand smoke and  protecting yourself , not only from the addictive side but also from the physical effects side, should be your top priority.  Let your concerns be known.
