I will back up rusty here with the Alan Carr book, The easyway to quit smoking.  I took Champ-IX for the first week of my quit while I was reading the book.  After I finished the book I stopped taking the Champ-IX and haven't had any desire to smoke since.  I'm only on Day 18 but the booked really helped and where you can't take meds it's nice to have the extra amo.  Also the book is written by an ex smoker if you know what I mean.  Take care Rock, we are here to help.

Thanks to all for your support!  Today is day 2.  Drinking coffee, reading the newspaper, but no smoking.  No cravings yet, but have only been awake for 45 minutes.  Usually I would have 3-4 cigs in the first hour I was awake every day. I have my HUGE bottle of ice water handy!  HAGD!

Hi Rock and Welcome..  I am a stroke survivor.. I have tried off n on over the past 5 yrs..   This time  I used Chantix .. for about 60 days ( then I had increasing side effects) I  found this site.. and with loads of help and wonderful advice, The best cheerleaders ever.. Warm friend ships  I am close to 200 days.
 
 I also read  "Allen Carr's Easy Way To Quit Smoking"  to me it was quite helpful .
 
 I also had a water bottle with me EVERYwhere.. colder is bette, but whenever I had a crave I took a drink of water. Also rewarding yourself.. we used smoking as a reward.. when we completed a task, or for___________.  so I would take one bite of chocolate or a mint.  At the end of the first day I had  a "treat" at the end of the first week I bought a "cute" refillale water bottle and a magazine.. one evening I cooked one of my favorite dinners.  I saved my cigarette money..
 
I bought a new lap top ( well yes I was a bit short.. but my husband pitched in because he was so happy I had quit)
 
The first week is Hell Week.  this is the week where you learn to say NO and you learn what many of your triggers are.
 
heck week is next...  you are learning that saying NO to the triggers.. makes them less loud and goaway faster..
 
Ice water, ice chips  are your friends.. you may slosh when you walk.. but you know your kidneys are working well.
 
read thru the My Program, Tools etc and past posts.
 
I smoked 45 years.. and with help from my friends here I remain smoke free. and almost 200 days..
 
This is NOT easy but it IS DOABLE
 
  N O P E   not one puff ever.... and smoking is an oprion.. I choose NO
 
 when you get a crave  think :   H A L T  am I hungry? angry or anxious.?  lonely?  or tired?  these are BIG triggers  so make sure you have rewards and distractions.

Hi Rock,
A big welcome is in order!  You are doing a very brave thing to quit and you will LOVE being quit without those stinky cigarettes.  We are all here and ready to help you... others will be along soon. 
 
Any medical advice is best to come from your doctor but all of here can offer scads of advice on quit ideas-
First off, be sure to complete the program... there are ideas there for you. Most importantly... work on the rewards!!!
That is how to rewire your brain! Much needed so do not neglect this aspect of the program. 
 
I've seen these suggestions-
Stay distracted...crossword puzzles, computer, games, movies, this site.
Stay busy.... cleaning, projects, go out, exercise
 Other than carrots, I've heard of lollipops, straws,  cinnamon sticks, hard candy, popsicles (or ice lollies if you happen to be in the UK ;), toothpicks. Me personal favorite was very strong mints and red licorice.
but  THE NUMBER ONE MOST POPULAR ANSWER is 
 
ICE WATER!!!!
 
Yes, you heard it here but it's actually the Daily Llamas line..." ice water, ice water, ice water ". He is the king of ice water!
 Many, many have sworn by the water bottle. Regular or with the sport cap (nozzly thing) pull out cap.
Ice chips too. 
 
Hope some of this helps. Also go back and read old posts too... there is a wealth of information if you dig around in the forums. Cold turkey is the fastest way to get that nicotine out of your system...most will be gone in three days. Hang tough through this week. We are your cheering section!

Don't get rid of all your food...you'll need to keep your blood sugar up.  Get healthy food in the house instead, so it won't matter how much you eat -- lots of veggies and fruit, watermelon, string cheese, raisins.  Switch from coffee and sodas to teas and juice.
 
Do get rid of all your smokes and smoking paraphernalia.  Read Alan Carr's book. Stay here and post your questions and your feelings. Keep a journal. Take a nap. Go for a long walk.  Search through all the posts here and print out the ones that speak to you.  Learn as much as you can about addiction.

Hi all!  I have been under pressure from my hematologist/oncologist for the past 4 months to stop smoking.  Was diagnosed with a DVT in my left leg, have been on Coumadin (and sometimes Lovenox) for 4 months.  I've been afraid to try patches or drugs since so many drugs interact negatively with Coumadin, so I decided to go cold turkey when my doctor yelled at me yesterday. She thought I had stopped smoking already.  I know smoking can cause additional blood clots to form, so I need to stop smoking starting today.  Anybody else on Coumadin who can give me some advice to become smoke free?  I bought bags of baby carrots today, salad dressing spritzer to give them some taste.  I've also removed all snack food from my house to keep from eating.  Any other ideas?  Thanks so much in advance for your help in becoming smoke free!
