I have only had a couple so far. I figure I had smoked for sooo long that if I have a dream (that I even remember ) with me in it, would be natural for me to be smoking.
Try to picture yourself.. in most of your regular activities... now picture yourself NOT smoking, or staying in the activity or with your friends, wife... and you are Not looking for .. or drifiting off to find a place to light up... and then come back reeking of smoke, all nonchalant because ... no one knew what you were doing...
Soon you will walk past someone who has just smoked.. and you will smell it.. the light goes on... OMG did I smell like that too..... yep you did..

Thanks for all of the replies. I also quit cold turkey and since I have one more day of Hell Week to endure, I'm sure it is the effect that the addiction to nicotine had on my brain that is causing the dreams. I did wake up this morning wondering if I had blown it yet again. I was so relieved to realize that it WAS ONLY A DREAM!
On to tomorrow...

Wow. smoking dreams. ( could write a book on this one.) they started out as "smoking in my dreams" in the beginning of the quit...it was as if i were able to get rid of the urge by actually smoking while i was asleep. As the quit got easier...i would wrestle with myself "should I? shouldn't I?" then i had dreams with the cig in my hand but no matches....a fierce wind...and i agree...the more stressful the day - the more frequently the smoking dreams...some weeks i would dream every night and lately...almost not at all. The one thing that has helped me is waking up and realizing that it was just a dream - that i didn't ruin my quit...that i can congratulate myself for one more day...that i can actually make this work for my lifetime..that it's NOT temporary....i really believe that our subconscious is helping us remain strong...that the dreams (and i did this cold-turkey so they are not being brought on by anything outside my crazy head :) are reminding us that we are serious about this struggle and we are helping ourselves to remain strong whether we're 'active' in the actual process or not....i think the more serious and determined we are - the more prevalent the dreams will be. **so for all of us smoking in our dreams...Big Smiles in the Morning...it was just a dream...we are strong...we can do this....GOOD LUCK TO US ALL!

I've had some smoking dreams too. Like Ron, I usually have them on the nights when I've had a really tough day with the quit. I think on those days, my confidence to keep up the quit is shaky. Sometimes they are very disturbing. The one I hate the most is when I am hiding to smoke and I can't beleive I started smoking again. Everyone still thinks I am quit and I feel ashamed of myself for lying and sneaking. Then when I wake up, it takes me a little while to know it was a dream & that it isn't true. Scares the crap out of me. For me, I think the dreams come from my fear of failing. but in the long run I guess they make me stronger. Once I know it didn't really happen, I feel a sense of relief because I realize I really AM pretty strong. I try to remind myself of that and move on.
Hope this helps. Stay strong.
We CAN and WILL do this!

I've had a bunch of them since I quit, but I find they come more when I'm having trouble with my quit during the day. I think they are emotions I take with me to sleep and they come up as dreams. Most of them are fighting with myself over if I'm going to be able to stop smoking and many end up where I do end up smoking and trying to hide it. So far they have not caused me to start up again so I look at them as a way to work through my daily issues. Since I've stopped smoking I obviously I am thinking all the time about how my days are going without the cigarette. The more I'm thinking about that in the day it tends to come up as a dream. I guess I have a positive outlook on the smoking dreams. I look at it as venting off of all the negative energy or thoughts in ourselves that wants us to start up smoking again leaving you clear headed about your quit when you do finally wake up to the non smoking you.

Hi Fr8 good to see you today!! well I never had a smoking dream but my husband did except it wasn't him that was smoking it was me!! (he quit a little before me)
What effect do you think the smoking dreams are having on your quit??
I had bizarre dreams on the patches but they never involved smoking- I shall be interested to know how you feel about them-I reckon its because the first couple of weeks are thoughts are constantly about smoking and it just carries on into our sleep time, I reckon they'll soon stop.....................but hey well done on day 6 already woo hoo!!

I had a dream 2 nights ago that I was trying to sneak some cigs in to our luggage but my wife nabbed me. I probably have a smoking dream every 2 weeks or so. It hasn't had an impact either good or bad but it takes a while to shake them off in the morning. About a month ago I could swear I could smell it on me when I woke up. This far down the road I'm surprised I have them but this too shall pass I'm sure. After 30 + years of smoking the mind will take a while to let it go.
Glad you are back in the saddle............We are pulling for you

Well, I had another smoking dream last night. Very vivid and slightly disturbing. I had a similar one just a week ago. When do they stop? I slipped up last Saturday and had to start my quit all over so I wonder if that had any influence on having the dream? Anyone else experience this? What kind of impact did it have on your quit, positive or negative?
Thanks,
FR8TRAIN
