To tell or not to tell?

Hi all,

I hear ya.  For me if you count all of the quitting for 1 dayers along with the 1 weekers, 3 monthers and such I've quit over 30 times.  I was at the point where I didn't want to tell a soul.  My wife always gets excited when I quit and is always extremely disappointed when I fail and now she doesn't believe me when I say I'll quit.  Regardless, I told her and others anyway's.  I believe there is a certain amount of pride and accountability in it.  Believe me if my mind worked the way it does about getting a cigarette I'd be a millionaire.  I once tried to quit by giving my wife my bank card and cc's (Scary I know) so I would have no money at work.  I started secretly cashing in my pop bottles at lunch time and eventually saved up enough for a pack.  This time around I'm much more serious and mature about this.  I just recovered from a respritory infection where I couldn't sleep because the weezing was so bad.  I would sit up literally gasping for air and eventually thought.  Wow so this is what emphasema's going to be like huh?  Yeah F$%k that.  Anyways I'm on day 3 and this time I'm on Champ-IX.  Working out well besides the fact that I'm sitting here trying to pretend like I'm not going insane.  In closing, in my opinionTell em all.  If they laugh, they are jealous if they don't understand why you keep failing, they either never smoked or never smoked enough to make it a challenge and hey let's prove em wrong.  Take care.

Glad you bumped this Steve.  I had to think about this entire topic while reading from the very first post to the present.  Its strange but it made sense that I didn't tell a soul the first time and well, started up again even have a long period of time.  This time I told pretty much anyone who would listen to me and well, I'm happier this time around with my quit and more determined.  I'm not sure I would've continued this quit if I hadn't been open.

I had my prescription for Chantix and didn't tell anyone.  I finally decided on Thanksgiving as my quit day.  Then it was to tell or not to tell when with family that day.  I was afraid to in case I failed (false pride there) but I also thought that the more people who knew, the better I would face not smoking ever again as most of them had been smokers.  So, the big announcement before dinner - and I was applauded.  I was one of the last to quit.  Now when I'm asked if I smoke, I say no and it kind of startles me still when I do.  To me, it is momentous, to the person asking, just another question.

I just came across this old thread and thought it worth reviving.

I didn't tell anyone for almost a week. I didn't want to appear a failure if I couldn't keep the quit going. Some of the ones I told ask if I'm still not smoking and do congratulate me.

I'm not sure if it's good or bad but I can tell them it's been X days, Y hours and Z minutes.

Well, I didn't tell my wife I quit smoking until I'd got the first few days over with and survived.... I remember "warning" her that I might go back on them any day but that was just Civil Service-ese for "I'm covering my butt here"....  I waited for 30 days before I told my extended family and especially my son and niece & nephews who are in their twenties; then i invited them over and let them view the "monster-without-cigarettes...".  They've seen me smoking since they were infants, so this was very strange for them. I hope it made a real impression.

I told at work, my friends, everybody.  I wanted the accountability.

At work, they were scared to talk to me.  I am a bit aggressive anyway, and I think they were nervous.  I had to specifically tell a few, don't ask me how I am doing with quitting okay?  I will take your head off.  and you know what he did ask me and it made me laugh.

I think the smokers were waiting for me to fail and you know what, I think they still are!

nawwwwwwwwwwww I am a quitter.

I don't always tell. Why? The first sentence is a clue. I have quit at least twenty times. No one wants to hear it and few believe it. I have found that some smokers will actually offer you cigarettes when you tell them you quit; other people actually laugh. Whether or not to tell people is a personal decision. If you're surrounding by people who would sabotage you, don't mention it. If they are likely to be supportive and this is not your twentieth quit, then tell.
