Slip due to stress?

16 years ago 0 1160 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
My life is way less stressful since I quit smoking.  I handled the stress by smoking before and that is why I found myself chain smoking to cope. As I learned to not smoke I also learned to calm myself by doing deep breathing, long walks and all the other things you learn on this site.
The life stresses that were in my life before the quit are still there. I just now have the confidence to deal with the problem without the smoke screen. Turns out it is much easier. I no longer think my heart is going to beat out of my chest because I am not getting enough air. The way I thought about smoking a cigarette to calm down was just crazy. That is how an addict thinks.  I am no longer a using  addict so I can deal with stress and depression because I know what it is.

Sorry, guys I found the highlighter!!LOL

Always remember that smoking doesn't solve stress, it causes stress.  The further one gets into their quit, the easier this is to see.

By not smoking, I'm not stressing about where the next cigarette break will be.   I'm not stressing about how I'm going to afford the increase in price.  I'm not stressing about what time I get to smoke again.  I'm not stressing about anything except What in the world should I do for a reward?  That's good stress, not bad.

NOPE!

I live in a very high stress environment 24/7, plus I'm in a depression.  Overall I have learned
to live with the stress but sometimes it all just becomes so overwhelming that I feel like I'm
going to explode - plus my depression gets worse.

That being said, when all becomes very stressful I get as much rest as possible.  When I can
I nap during the day or just close my eyes and do some deep breathing exercises.  Also getting
at least 6-8 hours of sleep at night.  That's crucial for the mind and body to heal from the stresses.

One thing that I think is crucial to burn off my stress is getting out in the fresh air (no matter what the
weather conditions) and go for a good long walk.  Again, taking in deep breaths and thinking
about the good things in my life/my blessings etc. Long hot baths are very soothing especially
with lots of candles, some soft music and using a favourite oil or bubble bath adds to the
calmness. And yes guys, you too can take a long hot bath !

And one last note.. make sure when undergoing a lot of heavy duty stress - block out time just
for YOU to do what YOU want to .. 'ME' time is essential.  Even just to sit and listen to the
quiet.

Peace
