My lungs healed somewhat when I quit in January and I can walk further and not have to stop for rests as i push my trolley through the stores now... I have noticed also that some foods, like cheese, make my lungs cottony - something i never noticed before i quit... I've an allergy to dairy stuff?? patrick My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/18/2008 Smoke-Free Days: 108 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,700 Amount Saved: $1,215.00 Life Gained: Days: 20 Hrs: 2 Mins: 59 Seconds: 34

I have not coughed since I quit. I cough all the time when I was smoking. I wonder if it is a sign of something or it just happens that way to some people. Don't know for sure. The last time I quit for 5 weeks and never coughed. But I still got out of breath. But they say it takes a qhile for your lungs to start clearing up. We will wait and see. Hi Cabbage-- I have not really coughed at all during my quit, nor did I cough when I smoked. The last cold I had was about 4 years ago. I still get a little short of breath when exercising (spin & step)--but that has happened for years & doesn't seem to be any better or worse with quitting. I do know I am experiencing some circulation issues that have surfaced since my quit. (foot numbness & leg pain during exercise). I'm certain this is more related to smoking than quiting...and I'm sure I would still have it if I was still smoking. You've got some great stats there, Cabbage--keep up the great quit! Cabbage, First off, congrats on your quit. You're almost at 600 quit days! If you're worried about your lung capacity, see your doctor. He/she can refer you to have a pulmonary function test and from that you'll know what kind of shape your lungs are in. Danielle, Bilingual Health Educator

Hi Cabbage I'm in the same boat as you. My health has improved quite a bit and I haven't been sick since I've quit. But I am out of breath off and on and I wonder if that will last. I sure hope it doesn't. I've been lucky so far not coughing up a lung or anything like that. And I'm not coughing up phlem. I hope that's not a bad sign. Anyway, keep up the good work. Cigarettes Not Smoked

Pull that flute out of the closet! I keep mine leaning on the wall by my desk. I pick it up often and play bits and pieces of songs, scales and exercises. When I quit smoking I was unable to do much of anything with it but as time has passed my lung capacity and breath control have improved and I consider it an important part of my recovery. Ok, maybe I could have titled this post differently. Many people I know went through really rough health problems like endless coughing, aches, pains, and flu like symptoms when they stopped smoking. I was dreading the idea of a quit...but...my horrible bone wracking smokers cough went away the very day I stopped smoking and I haven't had a problem since!! My immune system seems to have stepped up to the plate too as I haven't even had a cold. However, I do notice that my lung capacity is low. I can't sing an entire song as I can't seem to take a deep enough breath, and I still get a little breathless after climbing stairs (4 flights over and over again at work). I think I need to get more excersise. I walk quite a bit, but don't do much of anything else....I used to play the flute and still have it tucked away in the back of my closet. Time to do some wind excersises! Anyway back to the topic at hand...the not being sick part. I feel like an anomily and I fear appearing bragadocious. I'm just wondering if there is anyone else out there who had a significant and unexpected turn for the better health wise when they stopped smoking? If anything, I notice that the lining of my nostrils has puffed out a bit making breathing through my nose difficult, and I've had to switch to a softer tooth brush as my gums bleed easily. I also drink far more fluids than I did before I quit because my voice cuts out if I don't. Other than that - nothing Ok, I will now start ducking tomatoes My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/9/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 593 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 23,720 Amount Saved: $11,860.00 Life Gained: Days: 54 Hrs: 21 Mins: 4 Seconds: 25
