Is this what I'm doing wrong?

Hi Kristilu, I'm sorry that you're having such a hard time of it. Quitting smoking isn't easy. In addition to dealing with the physical symptoms of withdrawal, there are also the emotional issues to deal with aswell. Finding alternative ways to deal with stress, anger, depression etc is not easy, but these emotions have to be faced, and dealt with, one way or another. New coping strategies have to be found and this can and will take time. The basic fundamental principle of a successful quit is simply that your desire to quit has to be stronger than your desire to smoke. Unfortunately, until you reach this point and believe it with all your heart ..... you will continue to struggle. Quitting needs to be embraced. As do all the 'unpleasant' feelings that come with it ...... But it can be done. I, and many many others are living proof of that. But it doesn't come easy I'm afraid. There will be pain and tears.... But that passes. Once you get through that (and the length of time and severity of it will differ for each of us), the rewards are absolutely phenomenal. The sense of achievement and pride that you feel are second to none. You may not be ready to quit yet, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't stick around here to learn and gain as much information and help as you possibly can. All the support you need is right here..... You'll 'know' when your 'forever' quit is here. But you have to believe first. I sincerely wish you all the very best and will be here to support you when you're ready. kristilu, Lurk if you must but don't hesitate to ask questions or seek advice about preparing for your last quit. You have nothing to prove to any of us and you don't have to be secluded until you've been quit for a while. There have been many successful quitters over the years that have prepared here for a while before committing to a date. We are rooting for you! First of all, you're definantly not a failure! You keep coming back and keep trying again - I have to admire your perserverance. I have a few suggestions for you. One of the things that kept me from going back was the fact that my children were behind me so much! My oldest son used to leave me little treets under my computer keyboard, and my daughters made me cards and told me how proud they were of me. I didn't want to let them down. Whether your kids do those things or not, I think you should profess your commitment to quit to them. Talk it over with them - tell them you've tried a few times and slipped, but that you want to be free of this nasty thing forever. Maybe set them down with some crayons and have them make big "N.O.P.E" signs to hang all over - and in the car so that you can see reminders that are from them. I doubt you'll want to dissapoint after all that! It makes this commitment very solid and something that afects your family. Make a list of reasons to quit and stay quit. Include some that are for yourself - even if they're just that you won't have to throw away anymore burnt clothing, or whatever it is about smoking that bothers you. What you are feeling is natural - your junky says you don't feel it, but you know what? You're here. You do feel it. You are ready, and there's no better time than right now. don't let shame bring you down.. keep quitting! for the rest of your life if need be! hugs and chocolate... plus you need to give yourself a structured reward system ... sounds to me like smokes were your only "treat". and figure out some non food rewards (even if your forum is famous) they seem to make you feel guilty.

Thanks to everyone for your advice. Although some of it was brutally honest, it is what I need right now. But you really pissed off the junkie inside  But, I will be getting rid of her soon. :eg: I am going to refrain from posting until I have my mind right on what has to be done and how it has to be done. The next time I post, I will have several days smoke free under my belt and you will hopefully all be so proud of me. But most of all, I will be proud of myself! Kristilu, You've received some great advice from you fellow members. Although you may have lost your temper a few times, don't you think your frustration with others is warranted sometimes? Don't all those demands feel overwhelming? You've coped with demands by smoking... You've coped with demands by getting angry... What other road could you take to help you cope? DL- You said that you don't socialize due to your depression. I am sorry and sad to hear that and wish that you felt better. I wish you could find a way to get out there and be more social. The thing is, you have so much to add and have a way about you that people really respond to. You would be an asset to any social setting. Kristilu - You've received great words of wisdom in this thread. Bottom line is = you really & truly CAN do this. It's not debatable. Don't second guess yourself my friend! I have been here for a long time sitting and reading over your post, Kristilu, and all the lengthy and powerful replies you've had since yesterday. I've been thinking about "magic" thinking - wishing I had some to offer you so you could get on with your quit with confidence but also, realizing then that there is nothing magical about quitting smoking - and all the members here have said exactly all there is to say to you in your journey right now. For myself, I wanted, needed, had to, quit so badly because I was in very real fear of losing my life soon and losing the quality of it even faster. That's a great motivator, I know. I don't work because of disability. I don't socialise because of depression. I'm a day late and a dollar short all the b****y time with the ones I'm supposed to love. But, I am stopping that way of living. I have wrecked my lungs but they still function - it is uncomfortable to take a deep breath but I can still do it. I wish I had something more useful to say...
