Smoking kills!!! I lost two sister and brother to this and yet it took me forever to get quit. I smoked for 51 years and I am sure there is damage, but I am not aware of it yet. So quit and live. Hey Kristlu, iam sorry about your dad, there are so many people that just think they are gonna get away with it, My quit had alot to do with my step dad, has Emphysema and only quit in 98 because he couldent breath any more, he is still alive and each day struggles for breath, just makes me crazy, any way he was a big factor in my quit i just couldent handle not being able to breath, they say to hold your breath, filling you lungs all the way up, then trying to breath, thats the way Emphysema feels, no Mam i know you dont want no part of that, i hope your dad gets along ok and quits smoking, and you take care of your quit :) Hugs Tresa My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/8/2002 Smoke-Free Days: 2014 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 40,280 Amount Saved: $7,049.00 Life Gained: Days: 287 Hrs: 21 Mins: 54 Seconds: 11

Kristilu, I am sorry for your Dad - 67 is not that old. We have had more senior quitters on this board who have been on oxygen, and have managed to come off or reduce their requirements after quitting. It is worth doing at any age - please tell him. And yes, a timely reminder for you as to why you want to do this. Stay close. Cigarettes Not Smoked

16 years ago 0 392 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Well, as some of you may know, my dad has been in the hospital with pneumonia for the last week. He is 67 and has smoked probably since he was a teenager. He was told this morning that he has emphysema and has to quit smoking or he will die. As I muttle thru day 2, this hit me like a ton of bricks. Drove me straight to the bottom of the ground emotionally. I am saddened for him, because at this point he is realizing what he has done to his body is irreversable. I realized that I do not want to do that. I don't want to smoke selfishly and find out one day when I've finally got my life the way I want it, that I will die of emphysema because I could not conquer the quit. So, for a split second I was instantly depressed to the point of thinking about going to the store for that cigarette, then I was hit with the sore reality that if I smoke, I will surely die before I want to. So, I am choosing not to smoke. No matter what, my life is precious and it is a gift, and I will not take it for granted.....
