DL, I too have stopped drinking alcohol as well as coffee as they are both HUGE triggers for me. Its funny how much better I feel without all 3 of those things in my system anymore. I was even at a bar the other night and stuck to Diet Coke and funny enough, felt great about not drinking and even better that I wasn't one of the fools that had to stand in the pouring, freezing cold wet snow that was coming down that night...HA HA HA....I am so enjoying being warm inside instead of feezing outside, trying to shelter ur smoke from the elements so you can finish it...god they really do rule ur life if you let them. I'm not saying I won't slip, I will try my hardest not too but I know if I do that it truley is part of the learning curve. Thanks for the reminder Lakenip and Kev, I truly got the understanding of the disappointment that slipping causes from both of you. I can't let myself fall into that trap of "just having a puff once in a while" - I haven't had a drink either at home or in company since I quit. No slips from me since the start of the big quit, but many will know that I had many many slips previous to this. They lasted between a day and week. Its not the falling down but the getting back up that makes you a winner. Small slips are part of the process of quitting. You are learning how to cope along the way. Well done guys for getting back on it! I've had numerous slips, some turned into 2 month long relapses, some turned into 4 day periods where I would smoke 3 or 4 a day. Whatever that one cig turned into, I realized that it never stopped with "just one" cig. When you smoke that one, or two, or ten cigs and then decide that you have to get it under control again, you have already intensified those nicotine pangs, cravings, thoughts yet AGAIN. Why did we smoke that first cig in the first place?...to get rid of a bad craving that we were having....what did smoking that cig REALLY do?..intensify and feed the cravings that we are trying to get rid of so we can lead a peaceful, addiction free life. It truly is a vicious circle. The only way we are ever going to be free from the cravings and thoughts is to not light up. I have been on this roller coaster ride for toooo long. I am staying a non-puffer. new me My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/26/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 255 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,120 Amount Saved: $1,275.00 Life Gained: Days: 35 Hrs: 14 Mins: 1 Seconds: 31

MJ, I can fully relate to you. I had a slip last night. Luckily I caught it in time, and have now slipped a patch back on. I am trying to just stay focused in the here and now, and not to look back. Keep that quit going strong! Thanks Sylvie for the words of encouragement. I am still pretty down on myself for the slip, but I know now how short the distance is back to a pack a day habit. I have no intention of going back there! Thanks for the message Sparky. I hear, and fully understand what you are telling me that even one puff can break the quit. But the journey is so fragile at the moment, that I knew I would go back to smoking for another indeterminate period of time if I reset my meter back to day one. Haven't really decided what to do about that but will likely add one day. I have had my share of slips. What did I learn? Lots. It doesn't take long before you are back to smoking full time. I do believe there is NO exception to the rule that you can have one puff or one cigarette and there will be no consequences. Whether you own up to it or not, it is alway with you. For me there is no way to sneak a puff or a cigarette and not have it turn in to full blown relapse down the road. So not to have a slip, don't light up. Stay away from situation that would cause you temptation. Don't be afraid to tell you friends that is not okay to smoke around you if you are in a fragile place in your quit, they SHOULD understand. Enjoy the fresh air, the clean smells and hug yourself for staying smoke free for today.
