Hi MJ & Lizzie, I'll definitely have a good read of that site. You both have good advice. I actually bought lots of books on depression and stress and anything else that I could find. But I gave up reading them as they were too hard work (with the exception of one book). Web based reading may be the answer as I can 'skim' better. Basically anything that makes keeping this quit easier is good. Right. this is my last post before I go back to work (I had a two day holiday). Between now and Saturday, I shall try and keep a calm, reasoned head to everything I do. On Saturday I will be back on letting you know if I made 7 months or not and willing on other people. Btw, MJ, I see you nearly have 10 days. That is a great way to go! Kev: Lizzie gave you some excellent advice. It is interesting that depression runs in your family. There is some research that indicates that it may be hereditary, but it may also be learned behviour as you grow up. Whatever the cause, there is no need to have to fight so hard just to keep going on a daily basis. One doctor explained to me that it many ways it is very much like diabetes in that it is a chemical malfunction. In the case of diabetes the chemical is insulin. In the case of depression it is neurotransmitters. That being said, if people with diabetes are required to change their lifestyle (which they learn through teaching and counselling) and may be required to take medications, so to do persons suffering from depression. It also needs to be said that the medical treatment of depression has come a long way since your mom's experience as scientific understanding has advanced. Explore your options Kev, life can and should be much easier. PS Beware the type of counselling that takes years and rakes over why you are depressed or what went wrong in the past. This is not really helpful. The shorter and more effective forms of therapy might include: What we do. (Behavioral therapy) How we think about things. (Cognitive therapy) How we relate to others. (Interpersonal therapy) How things are going to be better in the future. (Solution focused therapy) I thought you might find Cognitive therapy interesting. Kev, Smoking may mask an underlying depression, and smokers may take nicotene to self-medicate. Did you know that there is a sister site to the SSC called the Depression Centre, and you can take an anonymous test to see how depressed you are? You can access the site from the drop down list (labelled More Help) on the left of this page. Even if you are not clinically depressed, you may still be feeling quite low - this was certainly true for me. The other point is that you do not necessarily need to take tablets - there are also talking therapies available. I have read that these can be quite effective and give you a confidential 'other' outlet. There are other options out there, so please think about it. Cigarettes Not Smoked

16 years ago 0 1113 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi everyone. Well it is down to the wise advice here that I make it another day smokefree. How many more days I can do it for though is anyone's guess. I am just going to fight and fight until I can no more. Then and only then can I be happy I gave it my best effort. On the depression side of things, it runs in the family so I would not be suprised if I have a bad case of it too. Having seen my mum being pushed from pill to pill it seems very much a 'start with a, go through to z, and if none of that works, start with a again'. The generally leaves me with not much faith in the medical profession. That and the fact that I am unable to swallow tablets, which my doc just can't understand. I'd have to be dead or tranquilised before I see the doc again. There is of course a possibility that I am not depressed at all and just affected by depressed people around me. :) Either way, the only current way for me is to make my own happiness. Building from a base of only thinking positive things. I think I will start with 'For me to have made 208 days smokefree is an amazing thing.' My theory is that if I only think positive things then positivity will start to show in me. Saying it and doing it are whole different ball games. Lets call it 'ideal plan'. 'Realistic plan' is to find and increase brain rewards (baths, music etc) and to try and hold on as best as possible. I've tried to melt all answers into one post and even got a little smile in for bear. However, if you feel I missed anything then let me know. I've just had a bath, and my immediate plan are to sort out my music collection and try and divert my mind away from smoking. I would like to wish GRIN a happy 200 days! You rock. And I would like to thank you all for supporting me. You are my rock and a testament to why I am still here, getting up from the floor and trying to continue on. HUGS from Kev. Kev, I'm jumping in here late as usual but I know you don't want to smoke again. You are but a few days behind me and this has taken so much time and effert that it would be just plain silly to throw it all away. Many months ago I made a comment to you about changing your hobbies list in your profile. Take that quitting smoking OUT. You have already quit. The process you are in is the same as me. Staying quit. Make that your new hobbie. Staying quit is so much more fun than quitting. We get all the good feelings without the cough!! Hang in there son, We are all in the process of life and each day is different.
