I had a stroke almost 5 years ago.. I cut down, quit, etc.. went back to smoking. I have "tried" to quit I can't tell you how many times.... but that is the point.. I went in "trying" and not confident or determined. I got a prescription from my Dr for Chantix. he told me to use it a minimum of 12 weeks.. and actually wrote it for 6 months. I carried the prescription around for 6 months.. always an excuse not to get it filled..not enough money.. but I had money for cigarettes. When I decided to get it filled.. I couldn't find the written prescription... I called the Dr's office.. to phone it in.. I didn't say ..oh well or later. I made the decision to phone and get it. I started it on Sunday by Thursday I was down to 4 or 5 cigarettes, Friday 3 Sat 3 and Sunday 1/2. I had set my quit date..with the help of the Chantix site as Feb 11th. I guess what I am trying to say is you have to want it and not go in... just thinking I will try.. but thinking I am going to do this. The chantix helps a great deal.. I did get a few "cravings" yesterday' I either came on site, ate a lifesaver, drank water. I have a case in the beack fridge.. so it is really cold. I also kept busy ... I cleaned out the bedroom closet and have 3 bags of clothes to go to Good Will... Hang in there.. set your plan and do what works .. come back often the people sharing here have great helps and loads of inspirartion. Hey Jef55 - I need to learn how to play pogo, I think... i've never heard of it.. again i think i live under rocks. We have a lot in common I think. I'm also very very afraid of failing. I think this is a big reason why when I slip up and eat something that really bad for me, or I eat way way too much - I "choose" to eat badly for a few days after that until I regain my resolve. Because now I didn't really fail - I made a concious choice - for whatever reason.. "I LOVE food!" "I want to LIVE my life, not starve it out and always worry about what i'm eating!" "I'm a genetic chocoholic.. can't help it." (That one wasn't actually one of mine, but I heard from a friend of mine recently when i asked her to join weight watchers with me.. lol) It's all the same, though. And the thing is - those are all lies that we tell ourselves to justify our actions. We can't really enjoy our lives when we're too fat, because we have to spend all of life watching it happen and not doing it, and then we die young of weight related illnesses. And nobody really enjoys smoking.. We tell ourselves that's a reason not to quit.. "But, I enjoy it..." there's nothing enjoyable about it. You're going to be OK, Jef - Don't worry about the weight until you've got the quit good and under your belt, OK? Baby steps to good health! Also, the only crutch is smoking, so don't worry about using something! Things are kind of weird here right now, but don't be thinking that folks are thinking ill of you because you are using Chantix. I was a big cry-baby when I quit, and things went through that weird phase right then here, too, and I kept thinking that people were looking down their noses at me because I whined so much about it all. WOW MISTY !!! Did that ever hit home with me. What a wake-up call. That is, I think, what my inner voice says. If you don't try, you can't fail. I haven't quit yet, but have chosen March 1st as my Quit Date. I have read everything I can find and it has been uplifting. But your post made me look right in the mirror and ask myself, "Why do I always have an excuse why I can't do it?" I have the same problem with my weight. Guess I am kind of saying, "I'll start tomorrow." But tomorrow is always just a day away from success or failure. I have found it easier to just accept myself as a failure. What kind of character does that show? Misty, Thank you. You really helped my resolve to make it work this time. I will be using Chantix. A crutch? Maybe... But if it works, who will care that I used it. No one! And if I need to take it longer than others, so be it. Whatever works! Misty Moonlight Great post...The examples where excellent...I really enjoyed this one because it is so instructive and so descriptive about the workings of an addiction. Well done...Glad that you cut the instructor some slack, but I agree with you that she may not actually understand the struggle as she apparently has never been a struggler. I must agree with MistyMoonlight, nothing puts you out more than somebody telling you what you don't want to hear (particularly when they are right). One of the best things about this place is that there are people who say it like it is and don't let you away with any of the nicodemon excuses. I have been put in my place on a number of issues and all I can say is thank you (which is not necessarily what I thought at the moment). How many of us have said "this won't work for me" because in this way you don't even have to try as you are sure of the outcome. Believe us Wheezer, everybody's quit is different, the suffering, hell heck and other weeks are also different for everybody. Nobody can really know how much the other is suffering but we can certainly empathise. My last lapse after a ten-month quit was a result of listening to advice from the nicodemon and not from my friends here. I had gotten to the stage where I could do without their advice, encouragement and basic common senses - one cigarette and I was back to 40 a day.
