Cigarettes gone... next step Coffee??

Oh, oh, oh! I just thought of something. Maybe this changing lifestyles in order to quit has something to it after all. Work was a trigger for me. Maybe I should have given that up. Dang! Why didn't I think of that sooner? Think anyone would buy that excuse now? ;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 363 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 14,520 Amount Saved: $2,468.40 Life Gained: Days: 51 Hrs: 6 Mins: 45 Seconds: 28

Exactly, Kelly. And you know why? Because they are ground to pulp :eg: It never occurred to me to stop doing what I usually do or stop consuming what I normally consume in order to quit smoking. I don't think I would have even attempted it if I thought I had to do that...lol My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 363 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 14,520 Amount Saved: $2,468.40 Life Gained: Days: 51 Hrs: 6 Mins: 45 Seconds: 1

I just woulda been one sad puppy if I had to leave the house that first day Jonesin' for a smoke and missing my 5 am jump start, it was already a fearful situation and I didn't know a lot about triggers yet. I know I'm seriously not happy unless I get my coffee and I wanted this to be as positive as it could be from the very start. To each his own I say! Every quit is different but we have a small contingent here of successful quitters who tackled this particular trigger early on and came out the other side unscathed. Unhooked, I was prodding DL on another thread to begin facing the two big triggers rather than give up his triple strength coffee and beloved German Beer, I can't for the life if me remember where that was though. I had my first drink just two days into my quit, under adult, non smoking supervision though. I never drink to excess but wanted the confidence of knowing that I could indeed have a drink without a smoke. The funny thing about triggers is that once you face them, they're no longer triggers... :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/25/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 207 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,210 Amount Saved: $1,210.95 Life Gained: Days: 18 Hrs: 18 Mins: 4 Seconds: 11

Yeah, I get that, Brenna. I guess my post could have been clearer. I was referring to DL & Greger's discussion of giving up or avoiding triggers on a more long-term or even permanent basis. Aloha, You're singing my song. I got great motivation and re-enforcement by beating the crap out of ther triggers. Yeah, I belong to the I gave up cigarettes, I'm not giving up anything else club. One of the great pleasures of this quitting business has been the thrill of beating down triggers to a speck on the ground, then pulverizing them with my heel. The stronger the trigger, the greater the thrill. Unhooked, You're right - it is important to face our triggers and overcome them. However, at the beginning of a quit it can be necessary to avoid triggers such as coffee or alcohol. It can be too risky to face this triggers early in the quit and they can often be the main reasons why people slip and start smoking again. As quitters move through the quitting process and become more confident and established in their quit it's time to face these and other triggers. Brenna, Bilingual Health Educator

I too enjoy my coffee Gregor. I was aware of the triggers associated with drinking coffee while trying to quit but there was no way I was about to give coffee and cigarettes at the same time. Yeah, had a trigger but it got snuffed out soon enough. I love my coffee, but don't always enjoy it when made by others. I am here to say I can make an awesome cup of java using the finest purified water and the freshest coffee around. Love it in the morning while checking emails but also recollect other times when coffee was just perfect. My favorite was enjoying a cup of Java mixed with Baileys while flying first class to Europe and being paid hourly including travel time. :8|: But I can see that sitting on the front porch on a misty warm Hawaiian morning while enjoying a cup of Kona blend as Aloha runs joyfully down the street in her panties could be another spectacular moment. ;p Hummn, now what was the subject of this thread again?? I couldn't agree with unhooked more! For nearly four years here I have read, read and re-read ad nauseam "When quitting, stay away from alcohol" Why? It was cigarettes I was giving up, not enjoying myself!! Coffee is the same and so is Aloha's Naked High Street Hula-Hula. Don't avoid triggers, meet them, greet them and then beat them!! Do what you like just don't smoke! Penitent d1401

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

Ah, Gen, Most of the world drinks bad coffee and there is nothing I can do to reform them. On this website I am trying to help reform smokers though so I will refrain from commenting on your choice of coffees ;) On this particular forum smoking cessation and weight gain are key, so I can say that the best beverage available is going to be water, lots of water. Unfortunately I find myself washing down pies and cookies and cakes(homemade of course)with lots of water! Here coffee and caffeine enter again into the picture. High grade coffees are naturally much sweeter than 'grocery store' coffees but just a tiny bit of unrefined natural sugar can give any coffee just enough sweetness to satisfy a craving for something sweet as well as help suppress your appetite for more sugary beverages, unhealthy 'diet' sodas or between meal snacks. A cup of coffee with or before meals can actually help you eat less. If dinner does not warrant a fine wine then I often use a swiss water process decaf from Peru along with a glass of water. Sodas of all types are heavily laden with refined sugars or those questionable chemical sweetners which have recently proven to be as bad for dieters as their sugary counterparts. To those who have bothered to read this far take heart! You have found the courage to stop smoking, you are, of course, gaining weight. It's not the end of the world it's a new beginning and with a little perseverance we will eventually shed the extra pounds and get on with our non smoking lives. Now, I'm going to have a cup of coffee (from Nyarit, Mexico) and enjoy the rest of my morning.
