JDK Thread #25

Just thought I would pop in quickly to say many thanks for looking after me. I have been continuing on with this no smoking. Knowing that I am not alone has helped me tremendously. Your support has been the difference between me smoking at day 4 and not smoking at day 157. It is that simple. I am extremely grateful for this opportunity and all the wonderful people I meet here. Anyway, I know I have a very busy week planned so just wanted to give a seasonal greeting message. The list of people who have helped me is now massive and thefore if I were to thank everyone individually I would be here next year too. For every bad time, there will be a good time and together we can help each other through both. This year I have been enlightened to so many things. Not least that someone who has hidden behind a really really thick wall of smoke (emotionally and otherwise) for more than 15 years CAN actually give up smoking for longer than 5 days. Thats a revelation to me because I didn't think it was possible. While it does seem that I go through up and down cycles without learning anything, I actually do learn every time. New coping techniques, understanding views etc. There is a whole lot more to discover and I am looking forward to our next discussions. Now as I don't look ahead too far ahead (I would like to make it to christmas but there are no guaruntees in this life) I am not going to predict what will happen in 2008. All I will say is best wishes to everyone for a happy and smokefree christmas. Personally my best gift ever is right here. You. Kev, I am still really proud of you for getting through that car journey - that was a huge victory. I just want to say that it is absolutely OK for you to still have thoughts and desires about smoking. In fact I certainly did when I was where you are now. But, I knew from the people who helped me that this phase would pass. And that is why I am here now, in thanks to the people who got me through. It is also my job to help you recognise and kill junkie thoughts! It is a kind of antidote to addiction. You said "I guess all that really matters is that I don't get to the point of lighting up that cigarette again no matter how much or how strong my junkie thinking is.". Yes - that is it absolutely. The great news is that one day it won't bother you at all. When you look back in a year's time, you will appreciate the struggle that you went through to be free. That's why Lamplighter's motto is "Free at Last". It's not just your health that benefits, it is also self-esteem and self-confidence. So little fire cracker, let's not worry about the months ahead, your next mission is getting through your first Christmas and the 6 months milestone in January. Keep with the baby steps. Lizzie :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/23/2003 Smoke-Free Days: 1697 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 25,455 Amount Saved: 6,363.75 Life Gained: Days: 169 Hrs: 18 Mins: 12 Seconds: 5

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

Good morning everyone. Well, who would have thought we would still have so much junkie thinking so far down the track?! Thanks for reassurance that I am not alone in this. Panic over. I hope nobody thought I was comparing directly at them. It was more of a general thing. I guess it would stand to reason that both my ups and downs would happen pubicly. This is a true journal of everything. Completely uncut. I guess all that really matters is that I don't get to the point of lighting up that cigarette again no matter how much or how strong my junkie thinking is. I am glad you see junkie thinking for what it is and let me know. For me it can turn into pure reality if left unchecked. Thats a very good thing about writing often. So where next for me? Well I am for sure going to try out Jodi's advice to see if I can do it too (thanks Jodi). I am not going to think of myself as a non smoker as that causes a whole bunch of junkie thinking. I'll also try not to dwell on my near constant desire to smoke and maybe find some more diversion tactics. Now that the panic is over, I can go back proper to baby stepping it. Only thinking of the moment and not thinking of all the 'issues' I haven't solved. I'll also keep in mind that junkie thinking did not suddenly go away when I reached 100 days. And one of the most important things..'I'll keep in mind that I am not alone in feeling negative about quitting ability and that others have regular good and bad spells too. It's not all sunshine.' The only real forward thing I will say is that I would be nice if I could make christmas smokefree as it would be the first christmas where I haven't popped outside for a smoke when everyone is unwrapping their presents. I think I will also try and avoid smokey cars if I can help it. :) Just wanted to start the day on a positive note and say thanks to all. Unhooked, Lizzie, Blue Cloud, Penguin, Jodi etc etc. You have helped me get back on track again. HUGS from Kev oh, btw, no bath last night (I will try again tonight) but I did manage to get a fast walk out to apocalyptica 'Worlds Collide' which is very energetic album very good for junkie pounding. Hi Kev I may have posted a few weeks back about how good I was feeling. Hey, buddy, that was an upswing for me - a one day flying with ease. It is still pretty up and down with me. As far as I'm concerned, you are pretty much on track - don't listen to the Junkie. Keep taking it One day at a time. Be happy for the good moments and "TAKE OFF" to the bad. Hi Kev! Thanks for the shout out to us new quitters! It is very sweet of you. I used to be quite negative. I've since retrained my way of thinking. Every time I found myself being negative, I would force myself to think of the same thing in a positive way. Eventually I began to automatically see things in a positive light! It may sound dumb, I don't really have a way with words, but it worked for me. I really like your avatar! One of my daughters likes to draw manga and is quite good at it. Congratulations on your awesome stats!!! Hi Sue, I know you are absolutely right. Hope you are having a good day and making the most of it. You deserve to have many great days in a row. Am back home now and re-reading the things to be positive about list and attempting to not deep think anything other than maybe a chess position or two. One big positive is that people still talk to me even in 'DOWN' cycle #336 (where I often make no sense and go over old ground). Much love to everyone. Here's hoping for the next 'UP' cycle soon. Lizzie, you stepped in with the logic again didn't you!! My junkie thinking has a very very hard time battling your logic. That is a very good thing btw. I come out of reading your posts thinking maybe I actually don't want to smoke afterall! Especially the answer you gave to (4). You were so spot on the money it is unreal! When I see everyone spread their wings and fly with alarming ease, I have a tendency to panic and ask what is wrong with me. The other way that I panic is if I get a question that makes me think I am doing it wrong and might have to start again. 'I don't feel like a non smoker and I am being told I am. Whats wrong with me?' Stupid self analytic brain of mine. :) I think a nice warm bath tonight to chill me out and then take it from there again.
