ILovemylungs, This is a big trigger for many. We recommend you start replacing one habit with another. Instead of smoking, suck on a straw, chew on gum, drink ice water, take deep breaths and if all else fails, pull over, get out of the car and take a quick stroll. Getting yourself out of the car and giving yourself a breather at a rest stop may be just what you need. Keep strong. Danielle, Bilingual Support Specialist

What I did when I would have those trips ahead was cut a straw the same length as a cigarette and have those in the car and when I wanted to smoke I did my breathing though the straw. Breath in and breath out. It really helped. My friends use kid me about it because I had them in my car, in my purse, by the computer and the TV. I don't use them anymore, but if it was choice between a cigarette or the straw I would take the straw :eg: Be sure to bring along water. I don't know why that works so well but it does. Some candy to suck on and maybe some rocking music. Are you traveling alone? If so talk out loud to yourself. Give yourself some positive strokes. Scream out loud at the monster. Laugh out loud. Just don't smoke. You will be so proud of yourself, yes you will. Do something else besides smoking. Eat twizzlers, chew on a straw, suck on a mint. Just don't smoke. If you want to be a non-smoker, you have to not smoke. It isn't easy or everyone would quit. You have to have alot of determination. Once you have a new habit in place of smoking, life does get so much easier. Hang in there and be strong. Next week you will feel better. The first few days is the hardest. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/8/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 321 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,815 Amount Saved: $1,348.20 Life Gained: Days: 29 Hrs: 17 Mins: 46 Seconds: 18

I decided on Thursday that I no longer want to be a slave to this addiction - so I started on the patch. It has been tough, of course, but I have 2 full smoke free days behind me and well on my way to a 3rd. But today I have a 5 hour drive, and I'm dreading the cravings that will hit. I'm so used to smoking, windows down, music loud, while driving. I've been reading a few of the other threads but nothing on dealing with 5 hours of non-stop cravings and throwbacks to the smoking days... Any tips/advice on how to survive the day? I'm really scared that I will slip and I don't want to go back to that old habit anymore. Help...please!!
