JDK Thread #21

17 years ago 0 1113 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Evening all. I am home now and reading the forums and all the good advice. Since deciding to go back to basics I have actually had a positive upswing! Im taking all advice onboard. Lizzie. Yes, it is the break isn't it. I don't actually feel too bad if I am outside watching the others smoke even if I am not. It is just that break of mood, the change of scenery. And now that smoking inside is banned, I get some warm sun on my neck. It is part of why I am better at controlling this at work than at home. Unhooked, love ya! You always talk a great deal of sense into me. You have a special ability to reach in and pull the junkie thoughts out of me. Not too hard on me, but direct. Yes, Kelly is very clever...she is pure star to me. Kelly, you are soo right! I need to find something that is not at the computer and is not smoking. That could make a world of difference I feel. The JDK Threads are my diversion from smoking but it is also writing about smoking. Btw, if you and I were at a rock club, I bet you could influence me to ask someone out. You have a contagious happy attitude that even makes me feel like I could take on the world :) I even made a smiley so I must be on the right track. On the going out thing (thats the only way to meet people other than online) I shall try it this weekend whilst I am not stressed out and on call. Only for a little while and then build up each time. I'm fed up of staying on the offchance that if I go out I MAY smoke. This time I will look up too, or at least try to. One step at a time. I plan on taking my mums camera out and taking photos for my new other place. (I even have a plan) Gen, any way of dealing with it without smoking is a good way. Head on table wailing is exactly the same as me biting my fist or hollering. My workmates know I have already lost the plot anyway so it doesn't scare them any more. Writing large amounts of happy rubbish in chats is another speciality (another coping strategy using my new found love of writing). Thanks for popping in. My mum is up to your foot saga now. How is it btw? My mum said 'see this young lady can't even go to the shops and she is doing well'. I've done enough emotion letting for one day. I now have a proper list of things I need to fix in order to progress (which is better than not having a list), some great friends here, which I am very grateful for. I have a list of coping techniques too (longer than ever). p.s. also getting all the below out in the open was part of my healing. The start of this upswing. My heart feels lighter and now I am able to get on with the process. Of course it doesn't mean I will stop writing. I just plan on wrtiting some good positive stuff tomorrow. The rest of the night plans await so I will say good night for now. HiKev, One of the amazing things about quitting smoking is that we emerge from behind the smokescreen. We have to deal with our emotions rather than hiding, and it is scary. In facing addiction, we face the fact that we have to be honest with ourselves. The anonymity of this site means that we can be honest and be 'safe'. We do understand because many of us have been there. There are also all the people out there who are just browsing and thinking "thank goodness it's not just me who feels like that." I too used smoking as an escape (don't most of us?). So what do I do now? Well, I still walk away....whereas before I would have smoked, I now just have a glass of water or brush my teeth. It's actually 'the break' that does the trick, not the 'smoke.' I am actually much more relaxed now anyway - now that I am not taking 15 stimulants a day. So you will need to develop new techniques and skills - that's quite a positive thing, isn't it? It will also boost your self-esteem and belief. There are lots of benefits ahead that you can't see yet. And all you have to do is not smoke - the rest will follow. I am glad you are starting to have patches of feeling a bit brighter. This is only the start, it gets loads better further on. Lizzie :) PS You are still a bit worried about your motivations and whether you can quit forever. My advice is don't worry about 2 or 3 months ahead - when you get there, you will feel differently to the way you do today. Your mission today is just to concentrate on and plan for today and the week ahead. As Unhooked said "You've BEEN doing it for 100 days". And Lizzie says : You are doing great, Kev. I love hearing your plans for this week. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/23/2003 Smoke-Free Days: 1651 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 24,765 Amount Saved: 6,191.25 Life Gained: Days: 165 Hrs: 3 Mins: 49 Seconds: 1

Hi Kev, Hmmm. I'm with Kelly and the others. There just comes a time when you have to find a way of talking yourself round that awful time or whatever is causing you grief and where you think that smoking wll be the balm. I just came back from a holiday with my mother, as you know. It was a SAGA holiday. The hotel catered for people of a certian age - which included my mother. And I'm 55.... Our first night there we arrived at about 8.30, grabbed something to eat and then sat in the bar to have a drink and collect our thoughts. The place was highly lit and cavernous. Music was drifting down from upstairs of the electric organ variety. (When I was young there was a radio programme called 'Sing Something Simple' and this reminded me of that). My mother was talking constantly and in monotone about the minutae of her life and what to buy everyone for Christmas. I can't/don't drink any more. I don't smoke any more. I just don't. So I put my head on the table and wailed. Quietly. That seemed to do the trick. Anything to help! Gen :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/28/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 216 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,456 Amount Saved: 1,080.00 Life Gained: Days: 28 Hrs: 15 Mins: 41 Seconds: 11

Mornin' Kev! The Frankenstein? I don't think so! You may think that because you share a lot of your struggles where as others of us don't share as often or with as much detail. I really don't think it's that you are such as case. I think you are expressive and that you are sensitive. You take things to heart, correct? And, you are very self-critical? Please give yourself a break. Sometimes it seems you embrace the struggle. Stop doing that! I wish I was there. I would take you out and make you ask some nice rocker chick out. I want you to get involved in something outside of your work and home life. I want you to take a class or join a club (nothing on the pc). Something that gets you out in the real world meeting real people who don't talk about quitting all the time. Something that will help you to focus on living rather than quitting. Is there something you could get involved in? Have a great day, Kev. I promise not to smoke today. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/25/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 66 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,980 Amount Saved: $386.10 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 22 Mins: 24 Seconds: 53

Kev, you can do whatever keeps you quit. If feeling responsible to us or your family or your friends helps you, then do that. But don't forget to notice & appreciate all the benefits you get, either. It can't hurt that you feel better, smelll better, have more money, & will live longer. Right? The emotional part can be really difficult, Kev. You can do it, though, I know you can. Just start by being aware of the times when you're looking for something to hide behind. That's all, just think to yourself, "huh, for a minute therere I almost thought I wanted to smoke. But really, what I want to do is tell this perosn off", or whatever it is. You don't have to DO it, just trecognize what it is. And I'm kinda with Pen, too, buddy. JFDI, less navel gazing, more getting on with it might be in order now, too. There is no longer any question that you can do it, Kev. You 've BEEN doing it for 110 days. Cigarettes Not Smoked

17 years ago 0 1113 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi Penitient, thanks for your message. I hope I manage to deal with them and move onwards and upwards to the next stage of non smokingness. I'm starting from the beginning and building my confidence to do this again. Looking for answers, tips etc and a reading as much as possible. Other tools are : Deep breathing, hypnosis CDs, relaxing baths, walking, listening to music etc. Anything in order to keep smokefree. Obviously a bit dissapointing to realise that I am not far along the road at all but I am determined to stay with you. Hopefully you'll bear with me. I think I have to fix a lifetime of strange rules and genetic behaviour in order to move on properly. Otherwise I will continue going in this loop and one time I may not be so lucky. I have to fix : A) The way I deal with emotions and handle them accordingly B) Self confidence C) Mindset to life It is a tall order but not impossible.
