Understanding the Causes of Slips and how to Prevent them

I just read your post. I am so sorry you have to go though this, but you will do fine. What they can do these days is beyond belief. The medical procedures are amazing and ICU units have only the best. So my friend trust God, the doctors and yourself. You have more strength than you are aware of. You are right smoking would not help you or him. Just think if you did, now think it though. You would kick yourself for doing it in the first place. You would have to leave and go outside and smoke and come back into ICU and smell like smoke (icky). Then you would have to sit and wait and when it is time to go see your Dad you will smell like smoke and he would smell it too. Now you don't and I know you won't smoke and your Dad wouldn't want his little girl smoking either. I will keep you in my prayers and thoughts. My mom called me this morning. My dad had a cardiac catheterization today to get a look at his arteries. It turns out he has to have triple by-pass surgery as soon as possible. As soon as possible being when they can increase his kidney function enough to safely perform the surgery. As it turns out, he's had some kidney issues that the folks haven't been exactly up front about over the past year. Right now, he's in ICU harassing the nursing staff. (he would think that was funny.) They are hoping for a "go" on Monday. I am being told it sounds a lot worse than it is. Anyway, as the pressure was building in my chest and I was contemplating the news, I absolutely thought cigarette! Lots of them! Packs of them! It was probably the first time I've had such a strong pull toward smoking since I quit. I successfully dismissed that thought and it didn't ever even turn into a crave, really. But, it is evident to me that I am by no means in the clear. I spent a lot of time on the phone with my brother who smokes today. Had I been talking to him in person, I likely would be smoking right now. So, I suppose I've outlined a scenario that illustrates the (possible) cause of slip but, I don't know what the answer to prevention is. I was lucky today that there weren't cigarettes near me during that small block of time. Really lucky! Interesting topic. When I saw the title it gave me pause. I wasn't going to respond, but I will try and put some light on my slips. My first slip came about because I did not understand anything about quitting and what happens to ones body. I took zyban and on my first day I thought okay just don't smoke and the pill will take care of the rest. Boy was I ever wrong. By the end of the day I had this awful feeling and I was driving home and almost had a accident. I walked into the house and had a cigarette. What I was experiencing was a monster of a crave and I had no clue . Then I tried sometime later and made it another few days and smoked again. This process went on for a few years (blushing). But with each slip or relapse or whatever you want to call it I learned more. You know what really ticked me off is when someone called me an addict. Me of all people an addict. Well people that is exactly what I am. Once I could admit it and could say it and then made a commitment to quit things started to happen. Instead a few days I got a month, then relapsed and then I got 50 days and then a relapse and now look 200+ How to prevent a slip, knowledge, commitment, faith and just don't smoke or puff that first one. And this is really important never ever give up trying, it will happen when you least expect it. We most certainly could use additional thoughts and/or prevention techniques from any and all members. Serenity's post was thought provoking. A lot of moms do this very thing; sometimes out of necessity..the lessons, the sports, the homework, the rides to friends homes, the shopping, etc. But, when we finally get a moment to ourselves, I would want to indulge my addiction. I was "peopled out, touched out, Mommied! out". I pretty much wanted to be by myself and smoke. After so many years of being a mommie, I kind of lost the pezazz that I had when i was younger. I remember telling funny stories and making people laugh..having more excitement coming out of my pores. But, living 15-20 more years does take a toll on people, life experiences that are sad, disappointing, or even tragic..and druggin myself with smoking did not help. And some people use smoking as a tool to isolate themselves from others. The new me is emerging..I get a glimpse of her at times. But, I am still too tied to this addiction, or should I say, too bothered by it as of yet. I love reading about the total freedom phase of this journey. And, taking some ME time ,finally, is a self esteem booster; a sign that maybe we are loving ourselves a little more. new me My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/26/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 147 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,528 Amount Saved: $735.00 Life Gained: Days: 20 Hrs: 6 Mins: 2 Seconds: 9

Hey 2tone... yes, I do think it's positive. They will all have to get used to you the way you really are. On the marriage part of it, I think it's hard when one person sees the other person changing, and feels a little threatened by the change. Give it time, and I bet it will work itself out. I've been a little more assertive... just more sure of myself and less wishy-washy at times. It really is about taking care of yourself in a good healthy way. It's as if we like ourselves better for not smoking, and nobody is going to take it away! Hang in there!
