Going Out

Yes, I take Clonazepam and still have agoraphobia. Although, it is becoming more manageable. I had a panic attack in a store a couple of weeks ago, and instead of fleeing to the car as normal, I stuck it out. Would you believe I didn't die like I thought I was going to? It was the most amazing feeling to still be alive afterwards! Hang in there. Sarah :)

Denise, Congrats on the Lexapro success! Apart from one setback, it has been great for me as well. Although a combination of factors, I feel its mostly Lexapro. In my 5th week and have been symptom free for over a week. Stick with it, sounds like it is doing the same for you. Best wishes.

I experienced the same thing during my first week on Lexapro. I felt extremely withdrawn and agoraphobic, along with extreme agitation and anxiety which I hear is quite "normal" for the initial side effects of Lexapro. I am just beginning my 3rd week of Lexapro and all of these side effects have faded away. Most importantly, I am beginning to FEEL BETTER in general - less anxious, less obsessive thoughts, better mood in general, and I have had less headaches and neck/shoulder tension as a result. It is too early to give a full report, but this week, I do feel like being social again!

Glofish, Don't know how long you have been on Lexapro, or if you increased your dosage lately, but I have never been agoraphobic until the first week I took Lexapro. If I left the house, all I wanted to do was get back. Thankfully it faded away after the first week and has not returned.

Hi, guys, I was wondering if you take any meds and still have agoraphobia (fear of going out). I was getting better and worse so many times for the last 1,5 years in terms of going out. Now I've finally started to take meds (Lexapro 20mg) and thought I am feeling much better agoraphobia does not seem to go away. Only if I take Xanax I am able to go out - which is not a long-term option. I would like you to share your experiences. Thanks a lot

I have a great deal of trouble going out as well. My husband is my 'safety person' and I can usually accomplish small tasks if he is with me. I have gotten to the point where I can go into a store if he waits in the car for me. Restaurants are still out of the question. The online panic program should help you (and me!) tackle these obstacles. I know exactly how you are feeling. Sarah :)

Ellie, have you looked at the program on this site? They have a free 12 week program that you do by yourself or with a therapist. I know that part of the program is goal setting and exposure. It sounds like you would benefit from addressing both the thoughts you have on going out but also some desensitization. Have a look. Otherwise I have just forced myself to do things a little at a time, like eating out, first just going for the take out, then sit down to coffee, etc. But always with an understanding person, which it sounds like you have in your hubby. I have only started going out with the help of my husband(who has been an angel)but cannot master the fear of just going out by myself, as it petrifies the the living daylightl out of me. Because of all the symptoms and sensations that hit me . Anyone got any tips.
