Weight loss & saving your quit at the same time??

Bobbi, Everyones bodies are unique and yours may just be taking more time to adjust to living smoke free than others. A good tip to help jump start your metabolism is to eat small meals frequently throughout the day. You should always try to squeeze a small morning meal in within your first hour after waking. This will start your metabolism going for the day and then after this eat about every 3 hours. This will keep your blood sugar regular and your body won't hoard any calories to store as fat. Keep up all that great exercise. Brenna, Bilingual Support Specialist

Hi, Well I have now gained 20 lbs. in 8 mo. and it makes me SICK. I have always eatten one meal a day, and not a big one, and a healthy one, I do excerise, weight lift, ride a stationary bike, and I added walking to my routine, haven't walked in about three weeks, is so cold, so excerise more, I do not like sweets. Don't know what else to do:( I am not happy with my gain at all, will not go back to smoking to loose, just want to loose as it just makes it alot harder fight to remain a nonsmoker. understand what I am saying? some people say I don't eat enough so my body thinks I am starving it and grabs all the calories and turns into fat?????? but I am scared to eat more for fear I will gain more, my family has the tendencie to be heavy, smoking ate and did the excerising also and never a problem so what is going on? I have added more excerise to try to keep my met. going so far nothing has helped. go to my dr. in Jan. for a check up will talk to him and see if maybe he has an answer, I sure hope so, so sad looking like this, I am 5'3" and always weighed around 108,wore a size 4&6, now am 128 and in a size 8 most of it is around the middle, some might say is also a factor I am 66, but I have seen alot of thin 66 year olds that do not smoke. and I want to be one!!!!!!!! any ideas would be so appreciated. Thanks, (in time I will get the weight off, without smoking, NOPE! hugs, prayers pixie dust, Bobbi My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/27/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 260 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 7,800 Amount Saved: $650.00 Life Gained: Days: 38 Hrs: 3 Mins: 53 Seconds: 6

This is a tough time of year to be watching your weight, but keeping quit is far more important than a few pounds on the scale. I know some of you will be worrying about it, but remember what Rusty said, the pounds won't kill you, the cigarettes will! You also have to calculate in your age and circumstance, if you're over forty or if you're going through menopause, it will all have a bearing on your weight. So it may not all be the quitting that's the cause. The thing to remember is that it will come off, your metabolism does recover, and it does level off. So don't let a few punds destroy your quit, keep on going no matter what. It is worth all of it in the end! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 281 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 7,025 Amount Saved: $2,964.55 Life Gained: Days: 34 Hrs: 9 Mins: 33 Seconds: 25

Jacqui, Weight gain is a very common issue amongst quitters. It is one of the more common reasons why quitter turn back to smoking. Remember that smoking is a stimulant and increases your metabolism so when you quit, your metabolism slows down. This will eventually return to normal but it will take some time depending on your body. In the mean time, trying to maintain your weight is a good goal. Try doing so by increasing your daily activity level (leisure, aerobic, stretching) and controlling what you are eating. Aim for healthy snacks and drink a lot of water. Having straws or cinnamon sticks around are also great to tame craving. Brenna, Bilingual Support Specialist

Like some others I have lost quits because of the weight gain, grrrrrrrrrrrr. Now what did it get me? Another quit. So what are you doing? Are you eating and eating and eating? What are you eating? Are you moving, like walking, treadmill, or some form of exercise? If you are exercising remember that your body is building muscle which weighs more. Now I know that some of my weight gain is not all muscle, but I sure do feel better. I know the weight will come off one day and I have not become obese so I can deal with it. I will NOT lose another quit because of a few pounds. I do some form of exercise daily and I really try to eat like one should. My downfall is COOKIES, AND CHOCOLATE :p So for today there is a more of me to love :) Keep the Quit Sparky My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/30/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 225 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,250 Amount Saved: $337.50 Life Gained: Days: 30 Hrs: 6 Mins: 57 Seconds: 9

As my doctor and many people on this site have said, a few pounds won't kill you. Smoking will. His advice...embark on a search for the healthiest diet you can find, get out of your chair and start walking, and above all, don't smoke. Jacqui...this sounds familiar to me. It's sounds like me. I too went for the hold the weight strategy and didn't do so well. My weight is up a little more than 9kg in 9 months. That mild monthly weight gain is quickly becoming a monster at the same time the craves have returned at greater strength. The holiday may have something to do with the increased strength of the craves but it's probably more the weight gain. I've been here before with previous quits and this is a significant contributor to why I slipped in the past. I too have never had to work at maintaining my weight until now. I see that I'm not very good at it but my quit is great and strong. That's so inspiring, Allison, thanks for coming back with your success story! My sister quit in January this year, she has also lost around 30 pounds and will be running a 1/2 marathon next month. I kinda hate her, but I'm really happy for you!
