Advice to newbies (from a 2-week-old, LOL)

Very good advice, SammiJo! You've always been one smart cookie. Now, here's a little heads up - many of the older posts have been cut off if they exceed a certain length. So, if you get to one that is cut off you can do a couple of things. 1) ask the tech folks to fix it, 2) see if someone else has it saved and will post it, or 3) see if someone already has posted the entire thing. There is so much helpful information and insights here to draw from...just a little digging unearths some gems. I did a search, looking for another post, and I ran across this one. OMG, too funny, I was only two weeks into my quit! But it's still really good advice. :p Open each thread you find that has more than, say, 250 views. READ THE VERY FIRST POST IN EACH OF THESE THREADS! Okay, Ive only been here at this site for about a week, but already Ive learned SO much. Heres the most important thing I learned so far: Know and understand your addiction! I quit smoking at midnight on January 1st, and though I managed to stay quit for the next seven days (until I found this site), it would have been a whole lot easier for me if I had understood my addiction from the beginning. I thought that I understood what was going on with my body, but guess what, I had a bunch of facts ALL WRONG. I didnt know about dopamine or pleasure receptors or carbon monoxide, and I sure didnt know what specifically was causing me to feel loopy and stupid (my least favorite withdrawal side-effect). All this time I thought that smoking brought me pleasure, but it made total sense to learn that in fact smoking doesnt bring pleasure, just a temporary end to discomfort what a total difference that perspective made! There is so much to learn on this site! Even though I havent been here long, I have a brilliant piece of advice for newbies who are just starting out. Scroll through the topic threads in this area and open EACH thread you find that has more than, say, 250 views. If you have time for nothing else, READ THE VERY FIRST POST IN EACH OF THESE THREADS. Theres a reason for so many views those posts have been bumped repeatedly because they contain some really, really good information and/or advice! Read. Learn. Listen. Internalize. Smile. Celebrate. Breathe. I wish everyone success in their quit! SammiJo - this is sage advice. Too many new folks just post and don't read, they are missing out on TONS of free first hand experience and knowledge. Many points of view that are FREE! Good for you ! 2 weeks- you're doing wonderful. I agree! This is great post SammiJo~U get it doncha?! LOL I've said this in another post but I'll repeat anyway~ Education is a vital part of a successful quit program. It forces us to take the blinders off. Most smokers avoid reading and thinking too much about the dangers of what they're doing. It's called denial, and the sooner you remove it, the quicker you'll be on the road to recovery. RE: Fear of Quitting N2k=Need2know I began researching and 'learning' and one day (out of the blue) I was no longer afraid to quit. I was ready. RE: Addiction I kept reading and researching and one day (out of the blue-is there an echo N here?) I reached a saturation point. I just KNEW that even if I returned to smoking I COULD NOT ENJOY IT BECAUSE NOW I KNOW TOO MUCH. The facade has been replaced with facts. The thoughts that pop in my mind are 'mantras' and 'heart breaking stories of SSC members' and 'pictures of brown lungs' and 'corporate tobacco lies' and 'my meter numbers' and ..... You get the idea ;) In the words of golferman Knowledge is Power All the best~ 2 My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/20/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 515 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 11,330 Amount Saved: $2575 Life Gained: Days: 50 Hrs: 3 Mins: 55 Seconds: 36
